deploying from cd read-only problem

Posted: 11-25-2003, 02:37 PM
we have finished our image and are now looking for a quick and easy
way of deploying it. our units have cd rom drives so what we have
been able to accomplish is to
1: makde WinPE environment that creates and formats partitions.
2: copy the resealed image to the new partition from the cdROM
3: set the partition active
4: reboot from hard disk.

the problem is that all files are read only
so we
put image files in a self extracting zip file.
now after we copy the self extracting zip file we execute it.
this works ok but now there are some desktop.ini files that loose
their read only attributes. Has anyone experienced this?
Can anyone provide a better method for loading the image onto the hard
drive from the CD?
TIA
Terry

I'm using a bootable CD with Ghost and the HD ghost image.
My image is about 250M and takes about 3 min. to load.

TerryW,

You have not mentioned what archiving app you are using over there but just
for your information WinZip self-extracting feature has a bug - if you run a
result archive .exe without WinZip GUI, it clears all the file attributes.
However, if you run the .exe within the GUI and extract the files from
there, it will set the original file attributes (of course, if you have not
set Attributes-->"Reset archive attribute" option when you create the new
archive).

If you don't want to use GUI but rather automatic self-extracting exe, I'd
suggest you to use WinRar or any other archiving app that does not have that
bug (WinRar does not).
