You must install the software BEFORE trying to connect the printer.

Canon printers are particularly fussy about this! See:
http://www.coribright.com/Windows/Article%20One.htm
for uninstall/reinstall instructions.

Also ensure your USB ports are working correctly before you start the
installation.
