device manager is blank

for some reason my device manager has nothing in it,
and I mean it is blank not one device listed? If I right
click on c: and go to properties and then hardware it is
also blank. I have seen this question asked in other
forums but no answers that worked were given. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.
