Disk Read Error: Press Ctrl Alt Del to Restart

I get that message ( in the title) when trying to boot windows. This
happened to me earlier today and I used system restore to get back to
the desktop, but after about 5 minutes the OS started lagging out and I
restarted, and upon restart I got the error again. I'm trying system
restore again and I'm gonna try to run chkdsk, but I wonder if anyone
else has any ideas as to how I could fix this? I really don't want to
format, I just finished reinstalling, customizing and tweaking the hell
out of vista yesterday and I really don't want to do all that again.

Hi,

You may have a failing hard drive. Download and run a manufacturer's
diagnostic tool to confirm this. Backup critical data now.
