display problems XP Flat Monitors WP5.1

First, I am a court reporter who must use WordPerfect 5.1
for my job..no choice. XP came on new computer (Dell
Dimensions 2350). The Dell flat screen monitor, as well
as Samsung SyncMaster 170MP, would not display WP 5.1.
Received message "Video Mode Not Supported." Dell &
Samsung techs had no advice for me.

I received advice from knowledgeable WP5.1/XP user to
download Intel 845 G/GL Integrated Video Driver, Windows
XP, Multi Language, Multi System, v.6.13.01.3442,A05
(from Dell website). I can now display WP5.1 in Windows,
but operation is suboptimal...very slow cursor speed that
cannot be sped up in Windows, only 2 (bad) font choices,
and rest of system operation slows down dramatically
(Internet searches, etc.)

WP5.1 works well in XP environment ONLY IF run in DOS
Full Screen (doing alt-enter from Windows screen). The
only way I can do this is by using one of my very old,
huge, clunky monitors (Trinitron Multiscan E400.)

My question is this: Does anyone know of a setting fix
or another driver I can try that will enable my Samsung
SyncMaster 170MP to display WP5.1 DOS Full Screen on XP
operating system? I've now invested close to $1,000 in
new monitors that are of no use to me.

The SyncMaster will display WP5.1 using Windows '98, so I
know it's capable of displaying the program.

This is my last stop before I take XP off my computer and
go back to Windows '98. Hate to do it because I really
have enjoyed using XP, but typing speed is extremely
important to me in my job and WP5.1 in Windows on XP is
too slow to use.

Thx for your assistance.

If I were you (and I am, kinda - I am a court reporter, too), I would invest
in WP for Windows. You can open and save in WP5.1 format, so there is no
cause for concern when opening up a WPWIN saved document in WPDOS on
another, older machine.

If it worked with Win98, and XP is now on the same equipment, then, perhaps
the driver for your monitor has omitted the definition for this resolution
needed to run WP in whatever resolution you were running it before. If
that's the case, you could edit your monitor definition and add that in, or,
select a generic driver and try that (or perhaps you haven't installed your
monitor definition into XP yet - try this first!). Eventhough your monitor
may be capable of drawing the display, XP will restrict displays that are
not part of the monitor definition file.

I have been tinkering with DOS WP (I'm playing with 6.1 right now) and I
don't find that it's worth it to run these old things under XP. Don't get
me wrong - it does work - there are many tweaks, concerns, headaches, etc. -
I was just doing it for fun - nostalgia - but speaking practically, get the
Windows version and install it - well worth it!

If you really want all the nuggets of gold you can get for WPDOS under XP,
visit www.wpdos.org . There's lots of info there. Good Luck!
