Default DNS Error not allowing access to internet

Hi there.

I've had this problem before with my new laptop with Windows Vista. I kept
getting the error message " There may be a problem with your DNS (Domain Name
Server) Configuration. Windows failed to find the well-known server
'www.microdoft.com' using DNS. The server may be down."

It was fixed last time with simply time. I went away to college for a few
months, used their network/wireless, then came home and mine magically
worked. I know it's not a problem with my router or anything because I
checked everything and did diagnostic tests and the router is 100% working.
The problem is something with Vista and this DNS. IT's not even letting me
work WIRED (or wireless for that matter), therefore I know it's not a problem
with my internet connection (already called Verizon about that). I've also
tried all the troubleshooting tips on microsoft.com and the windows vista
website. Nothing is working. I need my internet for many reasons and haven't
been able to have it via my laptop in almost two weeks. Thanks!

posting the result of ipconfig /all may help.

Default Re: DNS Error not allowing access to internet

well thats hard because the laptop isnt letting me online so i cant copy and
paste it here because im using my desktop. im not going to type out my entire
ipconfig/all. it would take an hour. i can look/type up certain parts if that
would help.

it tells me my ip address and subnet mask, etc. it says all media BESIDES my
wireless connection is disabled (even when i plug in my wire for LAN).

i basically need to know how to fix a DNS error. all connections are fine,
my wireless strength is 100%... it's just this DNS problem. who should i even
contact about this? my ISP or vista?

Hello,

First of all I'd like to say you have my sympathy as I have this annoying problem too... and it always seems to happen when you just want to quickly check something...

Anyway, I thought it was Vista too.... it isn't I have the same problem when I try to log on

using XP...

Fortunately I can connect using Dial Up - from my laptop (XP) and I have boring typed out the IPCONFIG settings:

UK Dial Up:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
Description:WAN(PPP/SLIP) interface
Physical Address:00-53-45-00-00-00
Dhcp Enabled: No
IP Address: 213.130.142.10
Subnet Mask:255.255.255.255
Default Gateway:213.130.142.10
DNS Servers:213.130.142.32
213.130.142.33

NetBIOS over Tcpic : Disabled

I'll stick the lan cable in now - as I normally run off this anyway and see what that comes up with on my laptop

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
Description:Intel<R> PRO/100 VE network Connection
Physical Address:00-15-B7-E5-E0-5E
Dhcp Enabled: Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled: Yes
IP Address: 192.168.0.4
Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:192.168.0.1
DHCP Server:192.168.0.1
DNS Servers:192.168.0.1
Lease Obtained: 29 June 2008
Lease Expires: 30 June 2008

So, what does all this tell me - nothing (as I don't fully understand it) my own suspicion is
that it is a problem with my ISP or my ISPs telephone company - I am with AOL and I have a BT line - is this what you have?

My other suspicion is that a number of people get this problem contact the ISP (for which they are probably charged) and it is sorted out...however we don't realise it is sorted out until we reboot or something - so there you go

Please let me know whether you had a problem today 20080629... GMT 09:31

I'll reconnect using Dial Up now and post this reply... zzz
