In Vista, it's not a folder.
Vista uses a different file structure than XP does/did. Those familiar
folder names you may be used to, like "My Documents", "Documents &
Settings", etc.
are not folders in Vista. They are junction points, and are used for legacy
programs which were written to utilize the XP file structure. They will
redirect the programs to use the equivalent Vista folders.
If you keep the protected operating system files hidden, you won't see them.

In Vista......
Documents & Settings -> \Users
My Documents -> \Users\youraccount\Documents
My Music -> \Users\youraccount\Music
Application Data -> \Users\youraccount\AppData
etc.

Hi, ITNews.

Documents and settings is a folder in WinXP and prior. It does not exist in
Vista, except as a "Junction Point" for the benefit of legacy programs that
have not been updated to work in Vista.

In Vista, look in each user's Documents folder. By default, find each one
in:
C:\Users\<username>\Documents

Of course, you will not be able to see the folder for any user except
yourself unless you furnish Administrator credentials.

And it really is not necessary to cross-post to so many newsgroups.

Hi,

On Vista, C:\Documents and Settings is not actually a folder, it's a
symbolic link. The folder containing the user data is C:\Users...

Where C:\Documents and Settings\John Doe would have existed, it's not
C:\Users\John Doe - the Docs and Settings link is provided for backward
compatibility for applications...

Hope this helps,

Jon

Your Vista install is behaving as designed. In Vista, Documents and Settings
is just a junction, a virtual directory there only for backwards
compatibility with older software. It's not "real" and this is why you
can't do anything with it.

Normal behavior. That's only a shortcut for use by older programs.

You want "Documents".

In Vista, Documents and Settings is not a folder and you cannot store
anything in it. It is a junction point that serves only to send anything on
to the proper folder User folder where such things are stored in Vista. I
know it looks like a folder, but it is NOT. It is more like a shortcut, and
by way of analogy, you know you cannot store anything in a shortcut. It is
there so that older software that insists on encoding that XP location as a
destination for it's information, will have it intercepted and directed to a
proper Vista folder. Leave it alone! There is nothing in it, and you cannot
put anything in it. There are similar folders, My Documents, My Photographs,
and such that are also junction points, and exist for the same reason.
Leave them all alone.

Good luck.

Hello,

If you have disabled the hiding of operating system files, you will see what
appear to be system folders with familiar names like "Documents and
Settings" and "My Music". They are shown with a transparent icon and a
shortcut arrow.

These are not really folders and contain no data. They are only there to
assist some old programs. Windows Vista has moved or renamed many familiar
locations.

The folder called "Documents and Settings" is called "Users" in Windows
Vista.
