Does Vista B2 defrag work?

Posted: 07-07-2006, 01:02 AM
Okay, I've heard here and elsewhere that it doesn't work and I'm curious.
The claim its not working is to defrag in Vista and then use a defrag in XP
if you dual boot and it will say the drives do need it. Now, my confusion
is, is that if you do the same thing in XP after a defrag with program X and
then check with program Y, the same thing will happen since no defrag uses
the same algorithms and placement schemes when defragging. So does it or
does it not work?

What happens when you try it?
Isn't the idea of the beta for us to try stuff and give bug reports to MS.

Windows Vista defrag works fine.

Just as you theorized, it uses a different algorithm than XP's, which is why
XP will sometimes say that a Vista drive needs defragged right after Vista
has defragged it.

from a command prompt, type in
defrag "drive" /a

forces an analyze of the drive, check the fragment %.
then say that defrag works.

have run it as many as 4 times with no change in %.

Run a real defragger. Run www.raxco.com PD or www.diskeeper.com Diskeeper.
Execsoft made the watered down defragger for XP and probably makes it for
Vista. Defragging is important and these defraggers are relatively
inexpensive; often they have significant rebates.

Look for the thread 'disk defragmenter' in *.vista.performance_maintenance
