Does Vista use a new version of NTFS?

Posted: 10-20-2006, 04:31 AM
I know WinXP uses NTFS 3.1, but does Vista use a newer, better version? If
so, what are the benefits of that versus WinXP NTFS 3.1?

The answer is "Yes, it does."
By the way, the version of NTFS in XP is 5.1, not 3.1
If I'm not mistaken, the version of NTFS found in Vista RTM will be
"6.something-or-other".

The version of NTFS found in RC1 x64 version of Vista is 3.1. If you know
how to use fsutil go check

You guys will learn to take anything Donald
McDaniel says with a grain of salt, as most
anything he says is wrong.

So all-in-all to get from WinXP's NTFS 5.x to Vista's NTFS 6.x - does this
require a full reformat? Or is 6.x simply the TxF we were posting earlier
that turns any WinXP NTFS 5.1 to Vista's NTFS 6.x automatically?

Larry,

New Vista's file system features like TxF and symlinks are designed to
have minimal impact on on-disk structures. As others already pointed
out, Vista uses same version of NTFS as most recent previous versions of
Windows. You don't need to perform re-format or any other
data-destructive procedures to be able to use these new features.

No change in NTFS, nothing to upgrade.

Donald:

Use the built-in FSUTIL utility and you will find that indeed, the version
of NTFS in Windows XP/2003 is 3.1

E.g. at the Commadnd Prompt type:

fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo c:

hit Enter

and look at the version number .. it's 3.1

It's called version 5.1 in the press after XP's NT version which is 5.1.
Windows Server 2003 uses the same version (that is: 3.1 / 5.1) of NTFS as XP
does.
