You are seeing the correct behaviour.
Windows XP Home Edition may not become a member of a Domain and will not
perform Domain authentication.
If you require this then you will need to upgrade to Windows XP
Professional - this fully support Domain authentication and membership.
This is one of the differentiating factors between Home and Professional.
(It is currently not that common for a home user to have a server and Server
operating system)

Cheers Mike, that would explain it.

On another note, is it posible to turn off all the 'Noddy'
icons and pictures, and 'Learn About...' links in the
control pannel as they are most off-putting.

I think this is also a case to upgrade to XP Pro, or the
nicer NT4.

Is it possible to get an 'upgrade' or will I have to buy
and reinstall the whole OS. Also will all the programs
that are already installed, remain or will they have to be
reinstalled/configured.

Cheers for your help,

with a domain setup / installed you should lose
the 'noddy' logon screen and get a slightly 'noddy'
network logon screen (a colourful windows NT domain logon
screen)

in control panal i assume you haveclicked the classic
control panal button for it to look almost normal? if so
it is ok (same for the awful new start menu)

I'm not sure about Home Edition - but on Professional there is a link to
Switch to Classic View on the left of the "Noddy" Control Panel.

Not much point in going to NT 4.0 Workstation as that product has already
entered it's non supported phase
see
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lif...s/default.mspx

You can do a lot to turn off the new view of Windows XP and return to the
classic Start menu etc.
You are much better (from a support, performance, reliability etc)
perspective to go to Windows XP Professional.

You can upgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional.
If a upgrade is done all apps etc are retained.
