You are seeing the correct behaviour.
Windows XP Home Edition may not become a member of a Domain and will not
perform Domain authentication.
If you require this then you will need to upgrade to Windows XP
Professional - this fully support Domain authentication and membership.
This is one of the differentiating factors between Home and Professional.
(It is currently not that common for a home user to have a server and Server
operating system)

Default domain logon

I have recently replaced 3 machines in my office with new
ones running XP Pro (previously had 98SE machines). My
server runs NT 4.0.
My 98 machines would offer a network logon at startup.
If a user did not logon to the network, the machine would
not boot.
With my XP machines, I am offered 2 choices at logon:
1. I can logon to the computer only
2. I can logon to the domain
When I try to logon to the domain I get: "Windows cannot
open the domain, either because the domain controller is
down or unavailable, or the account is not found".
If I logon to the computer I can then navigate via My
Network Places to the server and then it asks for my
domain logon and password, which the server accepts and
allows access.
I have run Network Setup and Network Installation but it
does not fix the problem.
I need security to be better so that a network logon is
accepted at startup.
Can anyone help?

Bob,
Do you have a DNS server. If you do is the XP has the correct entries
for the DNS.

Default Re: domain logon

This is the problem I have.
so far, I have tried everything Microsoft has to offer,
including sending them an email and being told it was a
server problem- fair enough assumption, but inaccurate.
I've edited the lmhost file to reflect the server address-
I disabled the option in local policy that tries to secure
the channel.
I've even edited the registry for the kerberos settings (a
valid MS suggestion).
So far, I can ping via the name and IP address.
However, when I attempt a net view, I get error 5- access
denied. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
