download via serial port

Posted: 07-07-2003, 12:32 PM
I used to be able to download files via serial port
without problems in windows 9x, ME, NT etc. using DOS
programs. It seems there is something that
restricts/slows down
download via serial port in Windows XP.

I have tried this while I am logged in as the
Administrator, and have tried the different compatibility
modes for the program properties. any other ideas???

I installed XP Professional over win98. It appears to be raesonably ok
but I cant go online
When i access my dial up software I have error 633 saying com port is
in use by something else. When I check modem status it says working
fine. Also says its a Lucent? software modem - which it wasnt under
win 98. However when i tred to put in another modem I got a ghastly
blue screen and for qute a while after could do nothong. Got it back
to an xp screen at present but still no poss to acces internet. The
only other item that appears is a message that says DVD decoder needs
updating and go online dddddddd!!!!
Thanks in anticipation

Sounds like your first install didn't completely take. Another install would
be my suggestion. I had a similar problem with getting online recently after
running XP for over a year with no problems. Also got the DVD decoder needs
upgrade at the same time as this problem. Turned out to be a lousy ad for
more costly software that I don't need. My problem: the modem would
actually connect but could get no websites to load and could get no
emails... Tried everything I could think of before doing a 'new install'
including 'system restore', which had always solved past problems, but
nothing worked. After 'new install', all appears to be solid again.

I think this is a case where a clean format and install would get rid of all
the problems and reinstall hardware with the correct xp drivers. It is a
lot more trouble than installing over an old operation system, but then you
will never know whether the old operating system is contributing to the
problem or whether it is an xp conflict.
