Downloades Security Updates - Won'tboot until second try

I downloaded security updates on 7/29. Since then it
won't boot properly. Gets hung up when the desktop
appears. Won't turn off with Alt-Con-Del. Have to turn
off the box and then turn back on -- then it will come
up.

What can I do?
