once i've got the download in the winmix programme, how do i get it on to my
mp3 player

Follow the instructions in the maker's manuel. Its that simple !

Once MP3 are downloaded they are sitting somewhere on your hard drive.
Getting them on to another device depends entirely on the exact device.
