Re: DSL to USB Adapter or RJ45?

Before I went wireless I used Sitecom L-013 USB Fast Ethernet Adapters
to connect my ADSL Router with my Toshiba 2710 XDVD laptop and a PII
266MHz computer I still have.
It worked always without problem and I couldn't notice any difference in
speed (I have ADSL 1024/512) with using a PMCIA card or NIC I also tried.
Those USB Ethernet Adapters are handy when you like to quickly connect
to another computer, like when you are going to do MicroSoft Updates on
a computer that normally isn't connected to Internet.
But for a permanent connection I would take a NIC, are very cheap nowadays.

Normally, the most you get from a broadband connection is 1.5Mbits/sec.
USB1.1 is around 11Mbits/sec and Ethernet ( RJ$% ) is 10Mbits/sec ( or
greater ). As both are faster then broadband is capable of, you won't
notice any decrease from either one.

I totally agree with you, but in practise I have found that ethernet
works better than usb for dsl/cable modem connections. Also, if at some
point the OP wants to add a router, ethernet again works better. The
advantage to usb is that one doesn't have to open the computer, but
putting in a NIC is trivial.

And is probably cheaper than an ethernet to USB converter anyway. But
in practice either works - on my cable system they provide a converter
with the install pack. I don't use it - a friend still on Win98SE with
USB but no NIC does. It was marginally more tricky to install, and it
needed a driver, but works fine.

As I use ehternet rather than USB, I admit I don't have any real world
experience. I'm only commenting on the technical aspects. Like many things.
What should happen is often different from what does happen.
