Can you tell us why? What functionality is missing?

I agree,
For starters, I think MS should have hooked it into BITS and secondly the
QFE's should specify what registry keys/values must be modified (if any).
Even better, MS should make an qfe.exe that is executed directly on the
device that installs and updates the required components.

It seems that you know somethiing about DUA. I am trying to learn it.
Right now, I have a xp box with DUA component. I have tried to follow
the tutorial in msdn, but it is not working. I never see the xp box
trying to talk/access the webserver where the .dup file resides. Any
idea why?

In the hostname setting under device update agent componet, I have
put a ip address and a fully qualified domain name. Neither works for
me.
