Dual boot of xp and 98 after xp is installed?

Posted: 01-16-2005, 04:54 PM
I know you can have a dual boot of xp and 98, but MS recommends that 98
already is installed, then install xp. Is there a way to do that in reverse?
I have two seperate hard drives with xp on one and 98 on the other. All I
want 98 for is to play some old games that xp wont even let the installation
program to start running. Thanks for any help!

It's doable, if your C: drive is formatted using the FAT32 file system.

MS-MVP Doug Knox has kindly provided clear instructions:

Install Windows 98 after XP is Installed.

A third party solution such as BootIT NG (www.terabyte-unlimited.com) can
manage these two operating systems for you.

If the 2 HDs don't have to recognize each other or to
be able to exchange files, why not just boot each one
independently via manual adjustment of the BIOS' boot
sequence (a.k.a. "boot order" or "boot priority")? Just
get into the BIOS during startup, put the HD that you
want at the head of the boot order, and continue the
boot process. The BIOS will hand off control to the MBR
in the HD that you want and the OS on that HD will load.

If XP is installed on NTFS, you will need boot manager software, if in the
unlikely chance XP was installed on fat 32, you can use the information on
the Doug Knox web site. Do a Google search for Boot manager software if you
want more examples than the ones listed below.
