Dual boot with 3rd drive(physical - not partition) installed

Posted: 11-21-2006, 04:46 PM
I'm dual booting with 2 separate drives. One with WinXP MCE and the other
with Vista RC2 v5744. I have a 3rd drive for storage use only which shows
up as drive letter J when I'm in the XP system. However, when I'm in Vista,
it shows up as driver letter H. How can I get it to show the same letter
when I'm in either system? The purpose of this storage drive is for my
backups and also for my Recorded TV folder. I went to select the storage
location in the Media Center (Vista) and was alarmed when I saw that the
drive was H and didn't know if that would make a difference or will it not
recognize an H drive as the location is set to J in MCE system.

I'd appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,
newtechie

Use Disk Management within Windows Vista to manage your drives and their
subsequent lettering. You will have to get your CD and DVD drives etc. out
of the way by moving them to the end of the alphabet. Then you can change
the lettering on the hard drives.

Hi Richard - thanks for your reply. The hard drives for the operating
systems are fine. They are maintaining their lettering. It's just the 3rd
drive that seems to be the problem. I haven't paid any attention to the
lettering of the DVD drives but I think they show up the same also. I'll
have to check when I get home. So are you saying I should changes the
letters of the DVD drives, then change the 3rd drive to J?

Something is now occupying letter J. Change it to something else to free up
the designation.
