The boot configuration store is probably written on the PATA drive even
though you installed Vista second (I assume). I read a thread elsewhere
that said that for some reason Vista does that when both PATA and SATA
drives are on the system. When there are only SATA drives the store is
written to the XP Pro x64 root and the boot options screen appears.

Its a bug. MS has to fix it. Report it along with the rest you find. What
can I say?

I have heard of cases where both PATA and SATA drives are used Vista writes
the boot configuration store to the PATA drive even though it is not the
boot drive. That means it is not on the XP root and the boot options screen
does not appear.

I was referring to the multiple post but, not your main concern, which I
answered separately. I don't know the best way to proceed with the boot
issue.

You should have backed up all important information before even installing
Vista, I imaged my drives to DVD media before I even installed Vista so I
can restore my previous operating system if needed, however just like you I
was installing as a dual boot. Backup what you can now.... you didn't
consider the possible outcome of your actions.
