All of a sudden my DVD writer has disappeared and I cant re install!
When I boot into XP it's there, can anyone advise please?

Did you install burning software like Sonic RecordNow?
If so, I had the same problem on 64-bit windows vista. Had to uninstall
RecordNow, then edit the registry to get rid of the 'lowerfilters' or
something like that.. then reboot.
My DVD drive works terribly in Vista, regardless. When I try to burn from
another computer (Vista 32-bit) then read in Vista 64-bit the computer just
sort of hangs.
I noticed MSDN no longer has 64-bit Vista RTM posted.. Maybe it was
recalled?

No. The servers were jammed. There is nothing about x64 that caused it to
be removed. Just bandwidth.
