DVD Writer and CD-ROM Drives Not Working Properly

Posted: 10-26-2003, 10:31 PM
I have a HP Media Center 884. It has a HP DVD Writer
200j and a Samsung CD-Rom SC-148C. I have had the
computer for seven months and they have worked fine.

Two days ago I noticed things were starting to go wrong.
When I put a CD in either of the drives, nothing
happened. Windows no longer asked me what action did I
want to take with the CD. When I double click on either
of the CD drives, I get a message that says: E (or F):\
is not accessible. Incorrect function.

If I open up the control panel, administrative tasks,
both drives show as healthy and then they will work
manually (no autoplay). Also, if I use software to play
a CD (e.g. Windows Media Player), they will work.

I tried uninstalling both drives and letting Windows re-
dectect them. Now both CD drives show up as Unknown in
device manager. It's like Windows does not recognize
them as DVD/CD drives. I have tried this several times,
both in the normal and in the safe mode.

I have recently used Windows Update and recently upgraded
from Norton Systemworks 2003 to 2004. Other than that, I
have not done anything unusual with the machine.

Does anyone have any idea how to get my CD drives working
properly again?

Thanks.

Joe

Goto http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch

That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))

Basically, the reg file from above carries out the steps displayed at this

Thank you, Jason, for the quick reply. I installed the
registry patch and the problem is slightly improved, but
not gone.

Now, when I put a music CD in either of the drives, it
automatically launches MusicMatch Jukebox even though I
set it to prompt me to ask what action to take. But, the
fact that it is autoplaying in some form is an
improvement. Both CD drives still show up in Device
Manager as Unknown. I uninstalled them and re-installed
them and got the same result. Looks like we're on the
right track but there are still some problems.
