Editing the Hosts File

Posted: 10-21-2007, 03:18 PM
Despite following the suggestion in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923947 ,
I am still getting the message:

Cannot create the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file.
Make sure that the path and file name are correct.

when trying to save a modified hosts file.

I am running an updated Vista Home machine with one user account.

Has anybody any further suggestions, please?

What security software are you running? It may be blocking any updates to
the host file.

Hello, Kerry

Thank you for your reply. None really - I have Zone Alarm, AVG, Spybot and
Windows Defender, but when I disable them all (following your prompting), I
get the same result.

I would, however, like to point out that I haven't really got to grips with
the Windows file security / authorization regime, so it could be something
very silly and / or very simple.

See the HOSTS file FAQ at Mike's site:

"Why do I see "Access Denied when updating the HOSTS file? (ZoneAlarm)"
