emachine w3410 HD Upgrade Help!!!

Posted: 01-19-2009, 05:40 PM
I own an Emachine W3410. I have added 1 GB of memory but wanted to upgrade
the clicking 100 GB hard drive. I brought a 160 GB EIDE HD, but when I follow
the directions, it does not recognize it (no response). I have tried moving
the jumper around but that does not work either. I went into the BIOS and
change the boot priority to CD ROM but still the same. I can see 160 HD in
the BIOS, but it will not load. I know this is a windows xp chat, and XP is
the program on the emachine w3410. Can I get a suggestion..please.

This is not chat, it's usenet, two entirely different things. XP is not a
program, it is an operating system, two different things again.
"I can see 160 HD in the BIOS, but it will not load", what does "it will not
load" mean?
Have you installed Windows onto the new drive?

Did you add the memory and hard drive at the same time? If so revert the
memory. How old is your DVD/CD drive - meaning that if the XP CD is a
burned copy some drives won't recognize it. Is your hard drive sharing an
IDE? If so, I did note that you changed the jumper setting - perhaps you
need to re-verify according to your drive, etc.

Also, for some installs you need to hit the enter key before the line will
show up to install from CD/DVD.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Your details are way too sketchy--have you tried to install XP on the new
drive yet? If so, describe exactly what you did.

The new 160GB hard drive is delivered "empty" and un-prepared. If the
BIOS sees this drive then you have to check in Disk Management in
order to make this drive "ready" to be used by XP.

Please note that Windows XP with SP1 installed (at least) is required
to have this drive total capacity known to XP.

Look on the hard drive's manufacturer's web site for additional tools
to help you to "clone" copy the older 100Gb drive's info. Cloning a
hard drive will make a duplicate of the installed version of XP.
