Encryption in Windows XP Professional

Posted: 08-05-2003, 11:07 PM
Hi There,

Here is a very interesting one...

Recently at work they decided to share our machines around
for people in other teams that work overnight.

So I've decided to encrypt my personal stuff. That worked
fine until was time to change my passwords. Now I am not
able to open any of my own files.

I've checked the security on those files and I am the only
one with the access. But I am not able to view those
files, copy them accross else where etc.

Any ideas in how to resolved this? Or is there a third
party utility that will help me resolved this issue?

I've try this solutions already
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308993#3

That didn't work, keep giving me an error message
saying "An error occurred applying attributes to the file:
D:\My Data\file.ext name. Access is
Denied" "Ignore" "Ignore all" "Retry" "Cancel".

If I retry I get the same error message, if I ignore then
moves to next file and gets the same error message.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Change back to previous password. After you change it you should be able to
open your files. Now you can change your password back to anything else by
using e.g. Control Panel -> Use Accounts -> click on your Account and click
Change my Password.

NOTE: If e.g. your local administrator changes your local password it will
break your EFS.
This prevents administrators from gaining access to your private files by
changing your password...

I hope this helps you out.

There were previously problems in pre-SP1 version of XP,
especially non-English. So, make sure the machine is at
current service level. This was also seen with XP in a
downlevel NT 4 domain (again, preSP1)

As mentioned, change the password back, and always
use the change password capability, not the set password
capability available in admin accounts.

And, Read Help and Support on EFS on how to create a Recovery
Agent. If something happens, and you have to re-install you user account,
you will lose access to your files.

EFS is meant to secure your files. There is no backdoor if you
lose access. Many people come in these NG's asking how to recover their
data. But, If it were that easy to break teh encyrption, Then encyrption
itself would be wothless.
