Addendum:

I place a shortcut of the .exe file on the desktop, and use the Vista "Run
as administrator" shortcut menu cmd to run Ethereal.

Don't even need to do it that way, you can set itup to run as admin
every time.
Just right click on the exwcute>properties>check the run as admin
box--- Bingo- :-)

It's definitely not covered by an NDA. And, as a free tool, it's pretty
cool. I think I like its parsing and filtering better than ethereal, so
far. That is, it hasn't crashed my machine yet, so far.

What do you people think of it?

Dave:

Just dnloaded it.
Remember the beta is free, we will have to wait for the final release to
know if that is also free.
Ethereal has always been free.

Re: MS's new network protocol analyzer (Netmon v3 beta2)

Dave:

Per a quick review of it:

Ethereal uses different colors for various protocols (facilitates reading
the listed packets); apparently Netmon does not.

Ethereal has extensive statistics info; apparently Netmon has none.

I plan to continue with Ethereal. Also, if MS spent two years
developing Netmon v3, I doubt that it will be free (Ethereal is free).

I looked for the download but can't seem to find it. Can you post the link?

Dan:

Same developers, same code, different name. The Ethereal network protocol
analyzer has changed its name to Wireshark.

Netmon 3 beta2:
Currently, to download Microsoft Network Monitor 3.0, you need to be a
Microsoft Connect user, and apply for the program under Available
Connections section after you login to Microsoft Connect.
