Explorer does not recognize a new SATA hard drive

Posted: 01-04-2004, 04:31 PM
I have recently installed a new additional Seagate 120 mb
drive on my Dimension 8300, but although I can see it in
the device manager, the drive will not show up on windows
explorer.

Does any kind soul know how I can solve this problem?

thanks in advance!

Did you format the drive after you installed it...?

Hi Jose,

If you haven't already done so, you need to create and format partition(s)
on the disk before it'll show up in Explorer.
Go to Computer Management (right-click on the desktop My Computer icon ->
Manage) then go to Disk Management. From there you can create partitions on
the new drive. Unless you have a need to access the drive from a DOS/Windows
98 installation on the same PC (unlikely), format the partitions as NTFS -
it's more efficient and reliable than the older FAT32 filesystem.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much David. I had the same problem as Jose. I knew I had to format the drive and that was the first thing I was going to do, but I could not see it in Windows.

Format! Format! Format!

The manufacturer has absolutely NO idea as to what you plan to do with your
drive, so "they" do nothing with it. It's all up to you to set it up to make
it work, to your idea of "correct".
