explorer.exe crashes on startup

icons, taskbar, system tray - just background. I know
from looking in processes that explorer.exe has crashed,
and when I type "explorer" in new task, the desktop starts
up normally and the users have no further problems until
they either reboot or shut down. But, I can't find the
cause, and I haven't run across any relevant information.
We have several XP users who all use the same applications
and programs, yet most never experience this problem. Has
anyone else seen this and/or do you have any suggestions?
