You could have corrupt system files. Try Start>Run type: sfc
/scannow Have your WinXP CD in the drive.

When ever I'm on the Internet I continuously get a box
that pops up and tells me "Windows Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for
the inconvenience." then it gives me an option to "Send
Error Report" or "Don't Send". It is always referring to
a appcompat.txt file. Anyone out there with the same
problem and maybe a fix? Any help would be great. Thanks

Bill

Thanks for the info, but it is not the solution. If I try and open the control panel thru the task manager as soon as I hit open the error message comes back up. I didn't realize that Clean Sweep is a problem, but I did not put clean sweep on until we were having this problem. If you have any other suggestions please let me know and I also will keep looking. It looks to me that my son has put the explorer icon in the recycle bin, is there anyway to get to the recycle bin other from the start menu? Thanks

Here is what I have done so far: Boot Machine - Cant get
into windows as it SLOWS way down, so I go into safemode.
Tryed to run online virus scan, also causing probelms.
After a bit of playing around I decided to rename one of
the NAV files. Now I am able to do online scans, so I did
the following scans (couldnt do NAV Scan, had to resort,
to online scans, NAV was just freezing before scanning 1
file). I did the following online scans; TrendMicro,
BitDefender, Panda, and Symantec (in that order). Then
ran AdAware (no files found), followed by CWShreeder
(clean), and finally Spybot S&D (22 files found, and
cleaned). Problem still persists. What happens is, in
more details is; Windows boots (Normal Mode, not safe
mode), if I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL I can watch processes start
this way, I watch them start up and as soon as NAV starts
up (usually signaling that startup is finished, as its
usually last thing to start), Explorer.exe takes up 90+%
of the resources, I cannot stop its process, nor can I
remove NAV as once Explorer is taking up all those
resources, I cant even open my start menu, let alone
Add&Remove Software. I would have tryed to remove NAV
from Safemode except that it gives a message saying that
MSI (Microsoft Installer) cannot run in safemode. I do
not believe that NAV is causing the problem, but at this
point Im not sure exactly what is... Any help would be
appreciated (posting is my last resort). Thank you, Ben

Problem solved, it was NAV. Had to disable all non-
microsoft services in msconfig, as well as all startup
items related to Symantec. Rebooted, removed NAV, turned
on non-microsoft services in msconfig (some gone now that
NAV is gone), enabled all startup items again, and
reboot. System now boots fine, and everything is working.

Hope this helps other people in the future,
Ben
