External Hard Drive works with USB but not Firewire

Posted: 10-15-2007, 11:56 AM
I have a BUSlink external hard drive which supports both USB 2.0 and
Firewire. When I hook it up as USB it works perfectly fine. When I hook it
up as firewire, the device manager sees it, I am even given the option to
safely remove it. But it does not show up in my computer and when I go to
disk management, it is not seen at all. That is the general problem, if you
need any specifics just ask. I just want to know how to get the external
hard drive to work on firewire. Also, it worked fine before on the same
machine when I was running XP. I did a clean install of Vista Ultimate, and
poof, I run into the problems listed above.

This sounds like a driver issue. Vista is a bit hit and miss when it comes
to supporting Firewire 1394 devices. Have you looked at BUSlink website to
see if there are any updated drivers for your model?

i did some research through HP, and they finally pointed me towards a
Microsoft KB article referring to firewire devices not enumerating properly
with vista. It had me attempt a registry edit to fix the problem, but it
still did not fix the problem.

Hi,

Like I said Vista doesn't support Firewire 1394 very well, if at all. There
are various reports that people have managed to fix some problems but even
more that haven't. Luckily you have the USB connection to fall back on.
