Throw away that MS-DOS boot disk! Or at least hide it so that you won't be
tempted to use it again.

As several others have told you, initial partitioning and formatting can be
done by Setup after booting from the WinXP CD-ROM. After WinXP is
installed, use Disk Management (type diskmgmt.msc from the Run prompt) to
create and delete other partitions, assign or reassign drive letters, and
format them to your choice of FAT or NTFS. As they said, MS restricts the
ability of WinXP to format FAT32 to volumes no larger than 32 GB. If you
insist on larger FAT32 volumes, you will have to find that boot floppy I
told you to hide. According to MS, "The maximum volume size that Windows 98
can create is 127.53 GB."

Note that these limits are per VOLUME (primary partition or logical drive in
an extended partition). Since a physical drive can hold several volumes,
the limits per HD are several times the per-volume limits.

FAT or NTFS? Unless you plan to install Win9x/ME on this computer, there's
no reason to use FAT on it. NTFS is much more secure, both in the sense of
secure from unauthorized access and in the sense of secure from hard drive
glitches.

I've been using a 120 GB secondary drive for several months. The largest
volume on it is 60 GB, but that's my choice, not due to any restriction.
Disk Management would have cheerfully created a single partition for the
whole 120 GB if I had asked, and formatted it NTFS.

- Check to see that the drivers you are using for your video card are the
latest and proper for your hardware.

- Next go to Advanced on video properties and change the monitor Refresh
Rate (NOT Resolution) down to 60Hz. If this greatly improves the image, your
issue is the Refresh Rate and you need to make sure your settings are within
the range appropriate for your monitor (check manual, mfr's website or their
tech support folks for info). If this doesn't help (assuming you have a 17"
or larger monitor . . . they should all support 1280x1024 Resolution
without problems), your monitor may be signaling "end of life" and need
replacing.

If you have another monitor available, try hooking that up to your computer
and see what happens (realize this requires changing monitor settings and
perhaps monitor drivers).

For months now, there have been a DCOM problem that I have been unable
to resolve.

Every morning, at 2:30AM, all workstations are rebooted. I do this
with a PSSHUTDOWN script.

Every morning, 1 or 2 workstations develop a DCOM error loop right
after the workstation has rebooted. It just keeps going and going.....
causing extremely slow logins and processing. The usual solution is to
reboot the workstation which clears the loop condition and makes the
workstation normal again. The affected workstations are not the same
every day..... it seems to affect all of the units on the LAN but
different ones each day. Yes, some of them repeat after a while.

The error seems to be related to WMI and I have looked at/set
permissions on various CLSID items and in WMI control panel and
DCOMCNFG with no change in the problem.

I need to get rid of this problem. I need to have XP stop repeating
this DCOM error race condition and any help forum members can provide
would be helpful.

log item is when the workstation was rebooted) , the loop and then
forced rebooted again around 8:38am.

I can print the fax manually by right clicking the fax and choosing
Print. Because I can print manually, and because the fax service runs
Local System not as myself, I suspect this is a matter of how the
printer is shared. But the printer sharing options on the XP Home
system are very limited: shared or not shared.

Anybody know the solution?

Usenet simply doesn't work that way.

The MS NNTP server will close, and the web interface to that server
will be gone.

But the newsgroups can and will continue to be propagated on all the
other NNTP servers that carry them.

Now, it's possible for MS to issue a rmgroup command, but those are
so easily forged that most NNTP servers have been ignoring them for
eons, so it's unlikely that any effort MS makes to cleanse Usenet of
its public newsgroups will work.

I recently read that the "powers that be" are considering creating a
bunch of new MS newsgroups in the comp.* hieararchy to replace the
ms.public newsgroups, so keep your eyes open for that.

everything the manual says. Use disk utilities, erase disk, place install

All I get is a gray screen with a padlock, a long bar and a box with an
arrow. All the articles I have Googled about HD install on a mac has ever
mentioned this. I was wondering if I have the only mac with this screen.
If anyone knows what that is or how I can install os X I would appreciate

I have an HP Photosmart C4280 printer/scanner, running on an HP tower
with Windows XP. I installed it about a month ago, and it worked.
Then I unplugged it and ignored it for a month. Yesterday I plugged
it in again, and POOF! it doesn't work. Instead, I get this error
window message:

"The function you have requested cannot be performed because another
program already has control of the device. If the program currently
using the device, save any unsaved work, close the program, and try
again."

Yes, yes, that's ungrammatical; but that's what it says.

I turned the computer off and on. Same thing. I hadn't opened any
programs, except HP Solutions (the HP-recommended way of starting the
device).

Hit <Ctrl-Alt-Del> to see what's running -- and the list of active
programs is empty.

Process Manager says there are severel processes running -- but there
always are -- and all of them are taking 0% of the CPU.

Something or other -- I forget what -- says that the driver IS
correctly installed.

Any ideas?

Sounds like some goofy coding for poorly designed programs that should
be querying for the DX version rather than looking at file revisions or
modified datestamps for them. Looks like wanting to use these goofy
programs means you're stuck using the web installer if it ends up
putting different timestamps on the files.

I have a virtual machine that runs Windows XP SP-3 as the guest OS.
dxdiag.exe shows the DX version is "9.0c (4.0.9.0000.0904)". This is
the same DX version reported by my host OS (also Windows XP Pro SP-3).
Both have been fully updated. I then ran the local (redistributable)
installer dated June 2010. dxdiag still reported the same version info.
I then used the web installer (but deselected the Bing Toolbar option
which means the web installer is adware) and still got the same version
info reported by dxdiag. I suppose the installers won't install an
older version; i.e., for some Windows updates, you can only move
forward, not backward. That would mean that using Windows Updates to
keep these hosts up to date already has the latest version of DX and the
installers can't go any further.

You'll have to ask those game and demo "developers" on just what they
are testing since both the redistributable and web installers seem to
end up installing the same version of DirectX (or, at least, can't
update DirectX any further than what I've gotten through Windows
Updates).
