> Yes, you will get a separate daily backup, but it will be a fraction
> stand-alone... it requires all backups that preceded it if a restore
> is needed.
>
> About specifying a unique file name for each: even third party apps
> won't let you do that. You specify the name of the original and they
> append 1, 3, 4 etc. to the end of that to show the serial nature of
>> This question is about the Auto Play feature in WinXP as it pertains to an
>> external USB hard drive.
>>
>> When I connect my external hard drive to my PC the Auto Start feature
>> kicks in. It scans through the entire external drive file by file to
>> determine what types of files are there (pictures, video, music, mixed,
>> etc.) Once it has finished a screen pops up and asks me what action I'd
>> like to take depending on the types of files that were found. (All of
>> this is normal behavior.)
>>
>> My question is: Is there anything I can do so that when I connect my
>> external drive to my PC the Auto Play feature kicks in but it does NOT
>> scan through the entire drive file by file, it just takes a specific
>> action (that I will pre define) regardless of what types of files are on
>> the drive?
>>
>> In other words, I don't want Auto Play to waste time figuring out what
>> types of files are on the drive. I just want it to take a specific action
>> whenever I plug in the external drive.
>>
>> Is there any way to get WinXP do that?

>
>Open "My Computer", right-click the device, click Properties, click the
>"AutoPlay" tab, and look through the options available. If you select
>"Do Nothing", I would think that would prevent the scanning of the files.

Yes, if you check "Do Nothing" it does prevent the scanning of the files
but it also prevents any other task from happening.

What I am looking for is a way to say - whenever I plug in my external
drive just perform this task - pay no attention to what's on the drive. I
can not find an option to do that nor can I figure out how to specify that
in a custom Auto Play handler (which I can write using TweakUI). But, I'm
hoping there is a way to do it.
| I have never been able to run 'sfc/now' without having to insert the WINXP
| CD (well 'never' within living memory :-)) All relevant references in the
| Registry have been checked and rechecked. This thread has been the first
| reference I have seen that suggests the problem may be due to differences
| between the installed version of WINXP (SP3) and the version that is in the
| i386 folder. I have checked the C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder
| which is compressed, and note the inclusion of SP3.cab whereas in C:\i386
| only SP2.cab is present. Will simply copying the contents of
| C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 to C:\i386 'fix' the problem or should I
| delete the contents of C:\i386 first? Secondly do I need to 'uncompress'
| the files before copying to c:\i386 or doesn't it matter?

| Will appreciate your guidance.

No I suggest to slipstream the C:\i386 folder with SP3 so the OS does what it wants to.
