For the past month I have tried to install SP1 but anything I have tried has
failed. I have done everything listed everywhere to try and install.

I have uninstalled firewall & AV software, run the update readiness tool,
run sfc routine and every other check there is to validate the system
readiness.

I have run both Windows Update, the 5 lang and the ALL lang standalone
package and all fail at the same point. It gets to stage 3 or 3 100%
complete, hangs there for about 10 minutes and then comes back with service
pack did not install. When i get back in windows, the WU doesn't display an
error code but the other 2 packages show the error code: 0x800F0826

Numerous days of chatting to help and support has not solved the issue. They
have then told me to do an inplace upgrade and try again however, the upgrade
fails as well. everything runs smoothly until the second stage of the upgrade
"gathering files". That gets to 70% and then comes back with "windown
installation encountered an error and cannot continue." (I have followed the
tech support routine for the inplace upgrade - involves switching off some
services).

I have rebuilt the BCD from scratch.

Any ideas of what to do now or am i looking at a clean install?

The system is: Advent 8117 notebook, vista home premium, 120Gb HDD (62%
free) intel T2080 processor, 2Gb memory. All drivers for audio and video are
up-to-date. currently no AV or firewall installed (but not on net with it
while i install sp1)
>Hi all,
>
>It looks like after I was messing with the registry of my Acer Aspire
>5720 I can't boot up properly .
>
>After booting up I see the Windows Vista home premium text with Vista's
>blue/green background and only two buttons. On the left is Ease of
>Access and on the right is Shut Down/Restart/Sleep button.
>
>I don't see the task bar, can't call the task manager with ctr-alt-del
>no Start button, no desktop icons.
>
>The safe mode starts fine (I'm writing this while in safe mode with
>networking).
>
>I've tried repair windows option with no luck.
>
>Startup recovery says: Could not detect a problem
>
>System restore says: No restore points have been created
>
>Complete PC restore: No valid backup locations could be found
>
>When I start command prompt it starts ok with x:\windows\system32 if
>not little strange since I don't have an X drive . I've tried
>unsuccesfully to start windows explorer by going to c: and typing
>explorer.exe. I don't know what else I can do with it :o
>
>This all started after I uninstalled Logmein software, or rather after
>I deleted all the remains of logmein in registry after I uninstalled the
>software.
>
>Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
If you don't have a proper Vista DVD(only the OEM recovery disks), download
the ISO Recovery file(about 120MBs) from the above site, and make a Bootable
disk.
It has the options that you require on it.
Read all the info at that site.
I selected the G: drive
next page I selected the types of files
It says:
Because this is your first backup, it will create a new backup now
I get an error message saying my settings are invalid
How do I fix this. Please? I really wish to protect my files

There is an additional problem in Vista with moving the Documents folder:

Many applications are still written for XP (and before) using "My Documents"
as the installation path for certain files. Vista attempts to correct this
by redirecting to the "Documents" folder. If that folder has been moved, a
shortcut exists in the folder instead and the installation is unable to
create the subdirectory it wants to create. The installtion then attempts to
create the folder "Documents", but Vista refuses to allow more than one
"Documents" folder. (It equates the shortcut equal to the folder for this
function.) This continues until it gives up and produces Error 1720.

While this is technically not a problem with Vista, it may make installation
of various applications difficult. (Especially when multiple users are
involved and the Documents folder has been moved.)
> on a single drive.
>
> I've tried to do the same thing under Vista and, though successful for
> though renaming the My Documents folder to "<User's> Documents" Vista
>> Thanks for this. Is there no official way to do it from microsoft as it
>> seems pretty stupid to sell a downloadable product with no other support
>> at all. Also will it be possible to access the files on my XP hard drive
>> once i've installed vista (planning to install it on a new hard drive)
>> as i've seen that its possible to have problems accessing the documents
>> and settings of other installs
> Upgrades are designed to be installed from within the product they are
> upgrading from - as there is no upgrade from an x86 product to an x64
> there is no issue here, everything is by design.
> If you want to use an upgrade product to do a clean install then as you
> have already been directed to one of the many sites detailing the work
> around.
>
> As regards accessing your files on another hard drive. The worst case
> scenario is that you have to take ownership of the folders and files and
> then reset the permission on them to allow you access. This is easy to do
> via Windows Explorer.

To use a retail upgrade version of Vista to upgrade from 32 bit XP to Visa
64 bit you have to boot from the 64 bit installation DVD and then perform a
clean install on top of the partition containing the 32 bit OS without
reformatting it.

What you're doing is fine, and yes you can modify the registry to redirect
new user's personal files. Be careful not to refer to anything as "My" as
that moniker is not used in Vista.
> Hi,
> My goal was to gain some space on my c:\ and to move all of my users files
> onto the d:\ drive. I have a vista 32b home premium, sp1 laptop with two
> drives. I successfully moved my shell folders to another drive (from
> c:\users\name to d:\users\name) by creating the new directory (and being
> careful to set the security up on the d: drive like the c: drive when
> creating the directory). To move the shell folders (My documents etc I
> accessed the properties and told it to move the files. So far no
> problems.
> I know that my profile still remains on drive c: and there are hidden
> files
> and directories under c:\users\name.
>
> Are there any known issues with leaving the setup as is? (Profiles and
> hidden files on c: & data on d:) I searched technet and found references
> to
> update issues with moving users, however that only seemed to be if I
> moved
> the profiles also. Does this mesh with best practices?
>
> Also, if this is consistent with best practices can I modify the registry
> to
> create the shell directories on the d: drive for new users?
>
> Thank you,

 > Hi,
>
> Vista has to install on NTFS. It can use FAT32 volumes for data storage, but
> not as the system volume.
> >I just ran the vista advisor from Microsoft and it said my 160 GB FAT 32
> >Hard
> > drive was acceptable. I was under the impression that Vista required NTFS.
> >
> > I don't like the convert command because it loses some performance and has
> > other issues.
> >
> > I can format and partition another 160 GB Hard Drive to NTFS and then use
> > Acronis to copy partions (it will copy the files from an image without
> > copying the FAT 32 format). The only problem is that it will take more
> > than
> > four hours. Does anyone know of a quicker method?
