When Windows Auto update attempted to install this on my system i
failed. Since then I have repeatedly tried to install in by downloadin
directly from the WU website and it tells me that this update does no
relate to my OS. It IS a Vista security update and WAU attempted t
install it also. Can anyone advise what might be the cause of this? I d
receive an error code by have been unsuccessful in tracking it down o
WU website. Thanks..........
> Hi,
>
> I have a program that worked successfully for quite some time and just
> recently it stopped working. I tracked it down to a reading of a registry
> key located in HKLM\Software where I get an error from the Win32 API
>
> What is happening? Why was it working before and not now? The same program

thank you very much for the links and such comprehensive details. I will
investigate them deeper over time.

Now only a simple clarification that comes to my mind:

when a user logs on with a user name and password - the CredSSP will forward
the actuall login/password, right?
but what will CredSSP forward, if the user logs on by using her smart card?
The only thing the user provides at logon screen is her PIN. So is that
true, that CredSSP will forward just the user's PIN to the TS? And that the
Terminal Server itself will then use the user's PIN and remote smart card to
log her on?

ondra.

 > Hi,
>
> Thank you for posting.
>
> According to your description, I understand that:
>
> You need to get some clarification about the CredSSP and delegation of
> kerberos smart-card credentials. Another question is how CredSSP works.
>
> If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.
>
> First, I would like to summary what's CredSSP and how it works.
>
> The Credential Security Support Provider (CredSSP) Protocol enables an
> application to securely delegate a user's credentials from a client to a
> target server. For example, the Microsoft Terminal Server uses the CredSSP
> Protocol to securely delegate the user's password or smart card PIN from
> the client to the server to remotely log on the user and establish a
> terminal services session
>
> The CredSSP Protocol is a composite protocol that relies on other
> standards-based security protocols. It first uses the Transport Layer
> Security (TLS) Protocol to establish an encrypted channel between the
> CredSSP client and the CredSSP server. (The client is anonymous at this
> point; the client and the server may have no common trusted certification
> authority root.)
>
> All subsequent messages are sent over this channel. The CredSSP Protocol
> then uses the Simple and Protected Generic Security Service Application
> Program Interface Negotiation Mechanism (SPNEGO) to authenticate the user
> and server in the encrypted TLS session.
>
> By default, SPNEGO has the Kerberos Protocol and NTLM available. The
> Kerberos Protocol is always preferred over NTLM. In Windows XP SP3,
> Windows
> Vista, and Windows 7, the SPNEGO client negotiates Kerberos or NTLM.
>
> The CredSSP Protocol introduces the TSRequest message. The client and
> server use this message to encapsulate the SPNEGO tokens and TSCredentials
> message that the client uses to delegate the user's credentials to the
> CredSSP server over a TLS connection.
>
> =========================
> Briefly compare of Kerberos and CredSSP.
>
> Like the Kerberos authentication protocol, CredSSP can delegate
> credentials
> from the client to the server, but it does so by using a completely
> different mechanism and with different usability and security
> characteristics. With CredSSP, when policy specifies that credentials
> should be delegated, users will be prompted for credentials-unlike
> Kerberos
> delegation-which means the user has some control over whether the
> delegation should occur and (more importantly) what credentials should be
> used. With Kerberos delegation, only the user's Active Directory?
> credentials can be delegated.
>
> =========================
> As for your questions:
>
> 1. Generally, CredSSP is not directly related to Kerberos. They are just
> two different SSPI.
> 2. CredSSP server and clients send TSRequest to exchange messages. For
> detailed information, please refer to the "Protocol Examples" section of
> the following articles:

Vista Ulitmate SP1 English, clear installation with SP1, AD 2008 level, 2003
forest level, single domain

correctly WORKING test:

a) have server SRV1.domain.local, IP address 10.10.0.11
b) create DNS A record intranet.domain.local, IP address 10.10.0.11
c) add site "intranet.domain.local" to the Local Intranet sites (IEESC
turned off)
d) purge Kerberos ticket cache
e) restart IE
e) try IE to http://intranet.domain.local (exactly this, not using the short
form)
f) only TGT received, but both TGT and TGS were requested as was seen in
wireshark - this is stil correct because no SPN was still created. So we are
going to create SPN and enable kerberos for the alias.
g) create SPN http/intranet.domain.local
h) purge Kerberos ticket cache
i) restart IE
j) try IE to http://intranet.domain.local (exactly this, not using the short
form)
k) both TGT and TGS were received successfully

the same procedure works the same way even for SMB/CIFS access (certainly,
the DisableStrictNameChecking must have been set up to 1)

but when I try to access http://10.10.0.11 or \\10.10.0.11 (Local Intranet
site addess, the caches purged out, SPN created etc.)
the Vista client not even asks for TGT - once again as observed by using
Wireshark
the client doesn't try Kerberos at all, it uses NTLM as the first method
without trying Kerberos first

With Windows XP client on the other hand, both types used -
intranet.domain.local and also 10.10.0.11 work the same and if the SPN is in
place, in both cases XP asks and receives the tickets.
> Hi,
>
> Thank you for posting.
>
> According to your description, I understand that:
>
> Vista would not use Kerberos against an IP address even if you have
> created
> SPN for the IP address.
>
> If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.
>
> I would like to explain that Service principal names (SPNs) are unique
> identifiers for services running on servers. Every service that uses
> Kerberos authentication needs to have an SPN set for it so that clients
> can
> identify the service on the network. Could you let us know how do you
> create SPN for the IP address?
>
> Also, what do you mean by "Vista is NOT willing to use Kerberos against
> an
> IP address"?
>
> There are some Kerberos Enhancements in Vista but these enhancements
> should
> not affect the work of Kerberos. For more information about those changes,
> please refer to the article below:
>
> Kerberos Enhancements
>
> Could you let us know where did you find that Windows XP try to generate a
> ticket for IP address? Did you use the tool "Klist"? If there is any log,
> report, it’s very helpful. A screenshot is better for troubleshooting.
>
> You can send log file or screenshot to tfwst@microsoft.com. Or please use

Download, install, update and scan with the 2 Programs below.
If the infection won't let to do that in Normal Mode(download, etc), do
everything in "Safe Mode with Networking".
All info below.

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

Download, install, and update.

Important re: Safe Mode
If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot
the computer, and go into Safe Mode.
To get into Safe mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow
key to get to Safe Mode from list of options, then hit ENTER.
RESCAN your computer with your Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes and Spybot S & D
while in Safe Mode.

If unable to install above Programs in Normal Mode:
Sometimes Trojans, Viruses, Malware, etc stop you installing and/or updating
Programs to remove them.
If that happens, reboot into Safe Mode with Networking (from F8 list of
Startup Options), and install, update and scan from there.

The best restore for Vista or XP or Windows 7, or even a Mac, is a Windows
Home Server. (For the Mac, you need to buy HP's version thereof, and the
very latest edition of that)

Full backups every night, with the ability to restore or look at any
individual file. The system writes like data only once so only changed data
is written after the first backup, and this scheme holds across all
machines--I.e. large swaths of Windows files will only be on the WHS once,
even with multiple Windows machines.

Bootable CD to restore from bare metal in about 40 minutes or so on older
hardware.

(HP's newest version has software that makes it Time Machine compatible.)

 > Complete PC Backup takes an image of your hard drive/partition the very
> first time you use it.
>
> When you next create a backup, Complete PC Backup only does an incremental
> backup, in other words, it only backs up files that have changed since
> your
> initial backup image was created. Your next backup does the same, and so
> does the backup after that. You are not going to get multiple full backup
> files. You will only get one backup file and cannot access individual
> files
> within this backup.
>
> Because only incremental backups are performed, if you want to create a
> full
> backup again, you simply delete the current backup files and then create a
> new one afresh.
>
> Restore function will show the latest "increment." Backup function will
> show
> the date of the original image creation.
>
> There is a method to force full backups each time, but this requires
> setting
> a checkbox (only available in the scheduling function of backups) and then
> using a command line to perform the backups. Not very convenient and
> quickly
> fills any hard drive.
>
> Many recommend Acronis True Image as an alternative to gain control over
> the
> individual file retrieval, but this does not reduce the HDD use if
> multiple
> images are being made. An alternative, since you are using Vista Ultimate,
> is to learn how to restore shadow copies.
> But this will not help you if the HDD becomes corrupted. Not sure if
> backup
> restoration also restores the shadow copies making them available to
> restore
> prior versions of files.

If you have some time, you may want to call Microsoft:

1-866-pcsafety in the US or Canada.

It is useful to call Microsoft in a situation like this for several reasons:

1) They will have up-to-the-minute information about any issues that have
been found as the update is distributed.
2) It will help them, and all the rest of us, if they hear how many
customers are affected about a possible issue with an update.

Basically, it helps everybody if they hear directly about a problem, and it
may help you, specifically, if they have a fix for your issue which may not
be sufficiently tested to be distributed publicly yet.
