Hello everyone. I have an XP machine with a few shared folders on it and a
Vista machine that won't access the share on it anymore. Here is what
happened: I went to add a third Raid card to my XP machine and in doing so, I
had to move PCI cards around. Two of those cards where network cards. BUT,
the network card I have WINS enabled on is an onboard card. Once I got my
PCI cards installed the way I wanted, XP wouldn't boot. It gave me a blue
screen. I imagine it's because XP thought, since I moved cards around so
much, XP was thinking I moved the hard drive to a new PC. So I restored XP
from a known good image I have and I got it to boot. It reinstalled the
network cards upon boot (Since all PCI cards but the onboard card where in a
different slot). At this point I was happy but my Vista machine could not
access my XP shares. Vista is prompting me for a user name and password.
Since I work on PC's all day every day for work, I didn't want to waste time
on this so I just reinstalled XP fresh. I thought that would do the trick
but Vista still prompts me for a user name and password.

So that is where I stand now. The same user is logged onto the XP box and
the Vista box with the same password. I can't ping the XP machine name from
Vista. The firewall is off on both Vista and XP. The workgroups are the
same on both machines. I tried to delete my Vista user name on Vista >
deleted my user folder on Vista under users > and logged back in to Vista.
Still getting prompted for a user name and password. I tried a re-boot of
both machines. I reset my Linksys router to factory defaults and I power
cycled my switch. I tried to add the adapter's IP that is using WINS to the
WINS's section on XP and Vista. I tried turning WINS on on all three network
cars on my XP box. I CAN get to my XP shares on an XP work laptop that I
have (After I tured off the windows firewall on the XP box even though file
and print sharing was allowed in the firewall).

Any help is appericated.
configuration command (such as /renew) will tell me (approximately, as I
didn't write it down) "this command cannot be executed until the adapter
is connected to a network". It will, however, tell me that my static IP
address and everything else is correct. Clearly the computer thinks the
plug has been pulled BUT the fact remains that I can open a browser and
surf the Internet at will. Very strange.
On computer two I have 3 C:\Users: Don, Don_2, and Public.
In Control Panel I have three Users, Don, Guest, and ComputerAdmin
On computer three I have 3 C:\Users: Don, Svetlana, and Public. (I
In Control Panel I have three Users Don, Guest, and ComputerAdmin.

How do I coordinate the computer Users so they are all the same? Do I do it
through Control Panel, or via C:\Users?
How do I know which are the true Administrator accounts? Do I delete all
Users and start from scratch? Sorry I don't know where to start.
> now so i want to format back to xfs as it was before before i do this i
> want
> to copy the files stored on it to my laptop so i don't lose any info
> unfortunatley i cannot see the drive when it is connected via usb to my
> laptop,is this because of the present format?does it need to be in ntfs
> for

I have seen several complaints on this subject. It also happens to me. Seems
to be only cosmetic, actual internet access appears to work just fine
(currently do not have globe on the lower right icon). It is almost 'normal'
response on my machine when coming out of sleep.

Vista Home premium, SP1, all patches automatic.
FIOS (but don't think that has anything to do with problem)
NETGEAR WGT624v3 wireless 4-port router

I have tried a couple of things. For instance making my IP address fixed so
that there is no renewal of IP after the wakeup. Nothing I tried had any
effect.

(physically unplugging then plugging the cable back in does get the globe
back for me, but not practical for the way my wiring is)

I have just come to accept the way it works.
> Not multi-homed. Single gateway, NIC, and subnet - the router has a very
> common 192.168.1.1 IP#.
>
> I looked at those web pages, but they seem to actually not work. My
> problem may just be a bug in the Vista's ability to tell if it has a
> connection, as (at least as far as I can tell), I always do have Internet
> access, even though it says "Local only." My concern, especially because
> this comes and goes, is that this is a symptom of some larger problem.
>
> Is anyone else running FiOS and having similar problems? I am on my second
> router from Verizon, but that didn't seem to make any difference. I do
> have the same problem on multiple Vista computers on my network.
>
> Thanks,
>>> If I hover the mouse over the networking icon in the system tray on
>>> Vista computers on my FiOS network, it sometimes says "Local Only."
>>> Networking and Sharing Center shows a red X between the router and the
>>> Internet. Restarting usually shows them as properly connected to the
>>> Internet. Eventually, though (usually about 30 minutes to hours later),
>>> it will lose that and revert to Local Only.
>>>
>>> Diangnose and Repair doesn't change anything. In fact, Windows usually
>>> reports back, "Windows did not find any problems with your Internet
>>> connection." Sometimes it says that TCP settings are incompatible. I let
>>> it change them, but the Local Only problem is still there and a
>>> subsequent Diagnose and Repair then always gives the same "Windows did
>>> not find any problems..." report.
>>>
>>> Some of those machines are laptops. I never have this problem when I
>>> bring those laptops to other networks (office wired or Wi-Fi, airport
>>> Wi-Fi, etc.). This seems to be limited to my home FiOS network.
>>>
>>> Note that as far as I can tell from using the system, it does have
>>> Internet access. Web browsing, e-mail, GoToMyPC, VPN, all seem to work
>>> fine. My main concern is that this "Local Only" report is a symptom of
>>> something more serious. If it's just a known bug in the Vista system to
>>> determine if it has Internet access, I guess I could ignore it.
>>>
>>> Is this a universal problem with FiOS? I see a lot of people seem to
>>> have issues with the Actiontec router.
>>>
>>> Should I care, given that I do seem to have Internet access (is this a
>>> symptom of something more serious, or just a bug in Vista's network
>>> analysis)?
>>>
>>> Thanks for any insight or guidance,

Network Map vs Available on the Network

All connected Vista computers always appear properly on my Network Map, but

All connected Vista computers always appear properly on my Network Map, but
they seem to randomly appear or not in the Network view. Those that don't
appear, are not accessible. If I manually type the computer name in an
Explorer address bar or from the Run menu, it fails (or it has shares that
are availale offline, it opens the Offline versions of the shares from that
computer).

If I restart the seeking computer, it almost always properly finds the
missing computer and talks correctly to it. But this is a major hassle and
clearly should not be needed.

This happens most often when I take a laptop off the network and use it on
other networks (Wi-Fi at airports, etc.) or let a computer hibernate or
standby. In either case, it's when that removed computer comes back to the
network that it can't see others. Note that for Hibernate, it's fully
powering down, but restoring from Hibernate often causes the problem. Again,
performing a Restart (even though that is not a full power down), generally
fixes everything.

Since the system appears propery (correct IP #, etc.) in the Network Map,
why might it not be accessible on the network?

I should note that I had similar problems in XP when laptops would leave and
return to the network. The difference for me is that in Vista, now I can see
them on the Network map, so I hope this gives an improved diagnostic to
solve this problem once and for all... or is this just an inherent problem
with Windows networking (never have this issue with Linux systems)?

Thanks,
Colin

Hi
The permission in such case has to do with the Network Storage (NAS) and Not
with Windows.
Not every external USB HD is a Network Drive. I assume that what you call
external USB HD is a Network Drive, and the Router has a general USB Server
(Most of the Routers USB is only for printers).
Check with Belkin to find out if the HD is compatible with the USB Server,
and how to make it compatible with Windows sharing. Almost all of the NAS'
are not based on Windows firmware and need a special setting to share with
Windows..
Otherwise give more detailed about the hardware and how it is connected.
