>I have a laptop with a 90GB hard disk. There is 60GB free and I'm trying to
>use the Shrink volume option in Disk Management to make the main partition
>smaller. After I want to create an additional partition so I can dual boot.
>
>The problem lies with Shrink Volume. Even though I have 60GB free it's only
>offering me the chance to shrink by 14GB.I've turned off system restore and
>hibernate. I've also used a number of defrag tools including Auslogic and
>SysInternals.
>
>Does anyone know how I can get Shrink volume to recognise the big chunk of
>free space I have?

You will need a third-party partition manager to do that. The Windows
Disk Management utility can only shrink the volume until it finds an
unmovable file and then it can go no further.

Try Easus partition manger... it's free.
>Hi,
>
>I'm one of those people who thought it would be a cool idea to
>partition 20GB for Vista out of a 320GB hard drive for "aesthetic"
>reasons. Now I'm falling back on this idea because my programs are
>installed ona different drive letter and do not show up on the Program
>Files. On top of that, if I get a virus or some sort of anoyying
>malware, formatting the vista partition does NOT make my program files
>still usable.
>
>So here's my situation, drive C:\ is for Vista, drive E:\ is just
>Program Files. Is there a way I can merge the two drives without
>re-installing Vista (chipset drivers, drivers, software, preferences,
>urrrghhh....)? Without re-installing all the contents of E:\Program
>Files? Making E:\Program Files\ show up in the Program Files menu?

Can't "merge" two partitions. One of 'em has to go.

If you're going to use Vista's Disk Management, it will have to be E.
Obviously, you'll have to reinstall all the programs that are on E.

I have a restore point created each night as a scheduled task and the
all finish successfully but don't always show up as a choice in syste
restore. (I start the system restore process just to see my restor
points, is there a better way!?) and sometimes the one created won'
show up, or all of sudden one day is missing and it's not the oldes
date, but the second or third newest.
Today i noticed that my task ran successfully but something triggere
it to start again 9 minutes later then failed. I am absolutely sur
there is only the one trigger for 1:30:00am so it's bizarre it tried t
run again 9 minutes after it completed successfully. Then i checke
my restore points and there were only TWO left out of 12. And the on
for the 19th was not one of them. just the 18th and 17th restore point
for 1:30:00am. Even though the 19th task did finished just fine befor
it kicked off again and failed. 12 is as high as it goes as for numbe
of restore points on my machine, but my disc usage shown with *VSSADMI
list shadowstorage* just keeps growing. It is at 15GB right now but
only have those 2 restore points.
And files I change, then save and right click to choose restor
previous versions, and i do not get any shadow copy versions t
restore, even though there is still a restore point from 1/18 and on
from 1/17. I tested this before when i had more restore points and th
"restore previous versions" has never shown any shadow copies.
Does anyone have any insight into this and can you name all service
that need to be running for both shadow copy and the ability to restor
from shadow copy?
I turn off all services I know i don't need and am quite experience
and work as a programming manager in IT. I'm not a hardware and OS gur
but I know enough what services can be turned off. the only one
question and I tested turning it back on to no avail is the Syste
Service. At home i'm not on a network and don't need tha
functionality. I've never had any problems with my XP box or the Vist
box up till now with Services service disabled.

thanks

I have long file names turned off on my system as it helps speed up things.
I don't know if that is involved but I noticed if I create a directory in
vista ultimate sp2 and make the dir name a repetitious char that search
goes brain dead.

example

(1111111111111111111111111111111111111111,)
(dir1.htm)
(dir2.txt)
(dir3.wrd)

If I search for dir2 or *.* or anything it returns nothing
paraphrasing. You also need to tell us what email program you're using. It
would also be good for you to tell us what kinds of files these attachments
are.

Aside from that, save the attachment to your hard drive. If you are really
sure you want to open it - with the understanding that opening attachments
is one of the prime ways to get infected with malware - then double-click
it and if you have a program installed that can read the type of file, it
will open.
Post back with the missing details and any other questions if you didn't
understand what I wrote. We're here to help. :-)

<This may sound like a silly question but have you tried using the 'change
icon' in the folders 'Properties tab'? If not right-click the file/folder you
want to change the icon for. Then select the 'Properties' option, which is
generally at or near the bottom of the list of options. Then in either the
General, Customize or shortcut tab if it is a link to your music folder
select the change icon button. a window will pop up with selection of Shell
icons for you to select, alternatively click the browse button to search your
PC's files. If in the properties window under the General tab the box 'Read
Only' is highlighted you will not be able to make any changes to this
file/folder. You must first clear the 'read only' box. You may also need to
edit your permissions for this file, you do this under the properties -
Security tab. Hopefully you won't have to go through all the editing
permissions stuff, it was all abit of hit-n-miss & a lot of pot-luck for me.
Now i ill try to solve any problems anyway possible before i resort to
messing with the permission of ANYTHING!! on my laptop.
*!!* GOOD LUCK *!!*

I want to prepare an existing setup for solid state drives. I want to
make my C: drive as read only as possible. I would like to move the
contents of /User and /Program Files off of the C: drive to new empty
drives and mount point these to the new drives.

I believe that I need to do this while booted from either a
maintenance partition or a recovery boot of some sort.

I have a few questions I hope someone can help me with.

Can this operation be performed from an emergency recovery boot? Will
it be possible to retain or recover my security settings of the moved
items? If I have to perform this while booted from a maintenance
partition, would there be a chance of misdirection with the mountpoint
since the drives and partitions would be ordered or numbered
differently while booted from an alternate drive?

Thanks for the time and help.

ps. I remember doing similar with windows 2000. I moved my /Program
Files folder onto a larger drive while booted from a maintenance
partition. The resulting setup worked very well.
