I have an HP Photosmart 7550 that was working fine. Now for some reason, it
prints nothing, except for the test pages. Those print immediately. I've
tried to print email, Internet, Word documents, etc. No luck.

I can see it go to the que and it says the job is printing, but then
suddenly it goes blank. The printer isn't receiving anything.

I have been in contact with HP and so far, no luck in resolving this. I have
just uninstalled the correct driver for this then reinstalled it. Now, not
even the test pages print; but I do get an Error message. Previously, Print
jobs were listed, then just disappeared.
> Can someone give me little help for sharing a printer with two desktop.
> They'er both running on Vista, and connected to a Linksys WRT-54G router.
>

If the printer is not a network printer (connected to one of the computers
locally instead of connected directly to the network by ethernet to the
router), you need to set up file/printer sharing on both machines and then
install the printer on both machines. Assuming that the printer is indeed
connected locally to one of the computers (don't forget to share it from
there), the installation routine on the second computer should see the
shared printer on the other machine.

Here are general network troubleshooting steps. Not everything may be
applicable to your situation, so just take the bits that are. It may look
daunting, but if you follow the steps at the links and suggestions below
systematically and calmly, you will have no difficulty in setting up your
sharing.

Excellent, thorough, yet easy to understand article about File/Printer
Sharing in Vista. Includes details about sharing printers as well as files
and folders:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx

Problems sharing files between computers on a network are generally caused
by 1) a misconfigured firewall or overlooked firewall (including a stateful
firewall in a VPN); or 2) inadvertently running two firewalls such as the
built-in Windows Firewall and a third-party firewall; and/or 3) not having
identical user accounts and passwords on all Workgroup machines; 4) trying
to create shares where the operating system does not permit it.

A. Configure firewalls on all machines to allow the Local Area Network (LAN)
traffic as trusted. With Windows Firewall, this means allowing File/Printer
Sharing on the Exceptions tab. Normally running the Network Setup Wizard on
XP will take care of this for those machines. The only "gotcha" is that this
will turn on the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you aren't running a
third-party firewall or have an antivirus/security program with its own
firewall component, then you're fine. With third-party firewalls, I
usually configure the LAN allowance with an IP range. Ex. would be
192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254. Obviously you would substitute your correct
subnet. Refer to any third party security program's Help or user forums for
how to properly configure its firewall. Do not run more than one firewall.
DO NOT TURN OFF FIREWALLS; CONFIGURE THEM CORRECTLY.

B. For ease of organization, put all computers in the same Workgroup. This
is done from the System applet in Control Panel, Computer Name tab.

C. Create matching user accounts and passwords on all machines. You do not
need to be logged into the same account on all machines and the passwords
assigned to each user account can be different; the accounts/passwords just
need to exist and match on all machines. DO NOT NEGLECT TO CREATE
PASSWORDS, EVEN IF ONLY SIMPLE ONES. If you wish a machine to boot directly
to the Desktop (into one particular user's account) for convenience, you
can do this. The instructions at this link work for both XP and Vista:

Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm

D. After you have file sharing working (and have tested this by exchanging a
file between all machines), if you want to share a printer connected
locally to one of your computers, share it out from that machine. Then go
to the printer mftr.'s website and download the latest drivers for the
correct operating system(s). Install them on the target machine(s). The
printer should be seen during the installation routine. If it is not,
install the drivers and then use the Add Printer Wizard. In some instances,
certain printers need to be installed as Local printers but that is outside
of this response.

I'm a template developer, and I have had months of Windows/Printer
technicians telling me it's an Excel problem, must be something to do with my
templates. Shouldn't take it out on others, I know.

Just glad to finally be getting somewhere
> > Thank you for the standard 'Pass the buck' response.
> >
> > I have found a partial solution - unsurprisingly not in the Excel groups!
> >
> > This is a known issue with a Windows Vista HotFix available from
> > Microsoft:
> > I hope the rest of you have better luck trying to get help from an MVP
> >> If it's only Excel that is having the difficulties and other applications
> >> > We have recently got new hardware and upgraded to Vista. We have also
> >> > just
> >> > changed to fully networked printing.
> >> >
> >> > We are having some printing funnies, but mainly when printing from
> >> > Excel -
> >> > no idea why. Here is a selection of the printing problems we have had:
> >> >
> >> > File-Print: Print dialog does not appear
> >> > File-Print/Print: Does not print, no printing message
> >> > File-Print/Print: Looks like it prints to printer (see printing
> >> > message),
> >> > but nothing prints out.
> >> > File-Print/Print: Looks like it prints to printer (see printing
> >> > message,
> >> > which includes some Japanese characters - we have no machines set up
> >> > for
> >> > Japanese), but nothing prints out.
> >> > File-Print/Print: When you choose to print more that one copy, only the
> >> > first copy prints out
> >> > File-Print/Print: Although a different printer is chosen, it prints to
> >> > the
> >> > default printer
> >> >
> >> > We think it's probably a collection of issues, any ideas for any of
> >> > them
> >> > very welcome!
> >> >
> >> > Thanks, K
