This may well be due to the Refresh Rate (e.g. 60, 70, 72, etc. Hz) being
not supported by the monitor or the drivers (could be either video card or
monitor drivers).

- Check to see that the drivers you are using for your video card are the
latest and proper for your hardware.

- Next go to Advanced on video properties and change the monitor Refresh
Rate (NOT Resolution) down to 60Hz. If this greatly improves the image, your
issue is the Refresh Rate and you need to make sure your settings are within
the range appropriate for your monitor (check manual, mfr's website or their
tech support folks for info). If this doesn't help (assuming you have a 17"
or larger monitor . . . they should all support 1280x1024 Resolution
without problems), your monitor may be signaling "end of life" and need
replacing.

If you have another monitor available, try hooking that up to your computer
and see what happens (realize this requires changing monitor settings and
perhaps monitor drivers).
> Windows XP Pro SP2
>
> I use CARDFILE.EXE from earlier versions of windows, and it
> woeked fine until Windows Cardspace was installed on my computer (I
> haven't figured that out yet). It took over the ".CRD" file type
> association. Nothing I could do could get the ".CRD" associated back
> with CARDFILE, until I d/l a program (OPENWITH ADD) that enabled me to
> set the association back to CARDFILE. I did so, but I have lost the
> ability to double-click on the ".CR%D" file and have CARDFILE open up
> the file for me to use. This is the registry entry made by the OPEN
> WITH ADD program: I did an export from regedit.
>
> Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
>
> [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\CARDFILE.EXE]
>
> [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\CARDFILE.EXE\shell]
> [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\CARDFILE.EXE\shell\ open\command]
> @="\"C:\\WINDOWS\\CARDFILE.EXE\" \"%1\""
>
> I have compared this export with any number of others to make sure the
> syntax is correct, and it matches to the character (except for the
> actual program name). Cardfile is a Windows app - it does not run in
> DOS.
>
> Note: When I double-click on my ROLODEX.CRD file name or desktop icon,
> the CARDFILE program does come up, bu with a blank list of cards with
> "untitled" in the title bar. I can click FILE/OPEN and navigate to
> ROLODEX.CRD and the it opens it no problem. I just can't get it to
> open the file in CARDFILE from a double-click. Also, the icon for the
> ROLODEX.CRD file is in fact the icon for CARDFILE.EXE, so I know the
> association is made, and can verify it in the registry.
>
> What in God's good grace am I missing here?

 > Hi all,
>
> Could anyone please help me. I have been trying for a while to delete a
> folder from my documents. Firstly when i try it says file name too long for
> recycle bin and asks if I want to permanently delete. I don't want them - so
> yes to all.
> Then it says cannot remove folder ........... The directory is not empty.
>
> I know the basics about computers, but when it comes to the technical stuff,
> I'd rather leave alone incase i mess it all up. Especially with dos etc.
>
> I have windows xp, when i've tried searching for help I have no luck.
>
> I'm asking if someone can exlpain this to me in "simple terms" please. Step
> by step would be a bonus.
>
> Also in add remove programmes, I have a very old kazaa file - very much
> unwanted but it won't unistall - says
>
> Setup has experienced an error
> please do the following
> close running programmes
> empty temp folder
> check internet connection
> then try to run setup again
>
> I have done all of this. Still no luck - When i look in programme files - it
> does not exist.
> Same applies to another file in add/remove - but that just sends error
> reports and doesn't explain why.
>
> Finally is there a way I can extend my (C:) drive my perhaps taking some
> memory from (D:) as they both hold 40G memory but only have 9%space in (C:)
> so can't defrag. unless i transfer files to (D:) but don't want to go long
> way round for files all the time etc.
>
> I'm sure you'll understand that I'm making no sense lol.
> Sorry to have written an essay - Please help!
The closest i see in add/remove is "microsoft .net framework 2.0 service pack 1"- is this what they mean re: the "service pack 1(2)) from above ? thanks~!

i tried to attach or insert a small capture of the image from add>remove, yet it won't allow me to do so - not sure why
> Information on how to clear up hard disk drive space...
>
> If you are comfortable with the stability of your system, you can delete the
> uninstall files for the patches that Windows XP has installed...
> ( Particularly of interest here - #4 )
> ( Alternative: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm )
>
> You can run Disk Cleanup - built into Windows XP - to erase all but your
> latest restore point and cleanup even more "loose files"..
>
> How to use Disk Cleanup
> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312
>
> You can turn off hibernation if it is on and you don't use it..
>
> When you hibernate your computer, Windows saves the contents of the system's
> memory to the hiberfil.sys file. As a result, the size of the hiberfil.sys
> file will always equal the amount of physical memory in your system. If you
> don't use the hibernate feature and want to recapture the space that Windows
> uses for the hiberfil.sys file, perform the following steps:
>
> - Start the Control Panel Power Options applet (go to Start, Settings,
> Control Panel, and click Power Options).
> - Select the Hibernate tab, clear the "Enable hibernation" check box, then
> click OK; although you might think otherwise, selecting Never under the
> "System hibernates" option on the Power Schemes tab doesn't delete the
> hiberfil.sys file.
> - Windows will remove the "System hibernates" option from the Power Schemes
> tab and delete the hiberfil.sys file.
>
> You can control how much space your System Restore can use...
>
> 1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
> 2. Click the System Restore tab.
> 3. Highlight one of your drives (or C: if you only have one) and click on
> the "Settings" button.
> 4. Change the percentage of disk space you wish to allow.. I suggest moving
> the slider until you have just about 1GB (1024MB or close to that...)
> 5. Click OK.. Then Click OK again.
>
> You can control how much space your Temporary Internet Files can utilize...
>
> Empty your Temporary Internet Files and shrink the size it stores to a
> size between 64MB and 128MB..
>
> - Open ONE copy of Internet Explorer.
> - Select TOOLS -> Internet Options.
> - Under the General tab in the "Temporary Internet Files" section, do the
> following:
> - Click on "Delete Cookies" (click OK)
> - Click on "Settings" and change the "Amount of disk space to use:" to
> something between 64MB and 128MB. (It may be MUCH larger right
> now.)
> - Click OK.
> - Click on "Delete Files" and select to "Delete all offline contents"
> (the checkbox) and click OK. (If you had a LOT, this could take 2-10
> minutes or more.)
> - Once it is done, click OK, close Internet Explorer, re-open Internet
> Explorer.
>
> You can use an application that scans your system for log files and
> temporary files and use that to get rid of those:
>
> Ccleaner (Free!)
>
> Other ways to free up space..
>
> SequoiaView
> http://www.win.tue.nl/sequoiaview/
>
> JDiskReport
> http://www.jgoodies.com/freeware/jdiskreport/index.html
>
> Those can help you visually discover where all the space is being used.
>
> If you are concerned over less than 5GB of space total at any given time
> being freed up on your hard disk drive - then something is wrong and
> you would be better off spending a little and putting in a drive that is
> likely 3-8 times as large as what you have not and not concerning
> yourself over such a small amount of space OR you seriously need
> to consider what you really need on the system and what should be
> archived.
>
> Basic housekeeping 101... - in an actual home, if your storage area gets
> full - you either have to decide what you really should have in the storage
> area and what could go or you have to find a new place to store stuff
> that will accommodate everything you need. You don't walk into a
> warehouse of cars, look at the filing cabinet in the corner where
> you keep all the records for the cars and decide that if you move it out of
> the warehouse - you will have more room for cars. ;-)

Hi,

I need to define a set of env vars that point to a particular file tree like
so: APP_VER = C:\APP.1.2.3. I then use that var in other vars like so: PATH
= %APP_VER%\bin;... We changes versions quite often, and all I want to need
to do is change the value of APP_VER and the other vars change accordingly.
(I use the System Properties dialog to set the vars.)

The problem is that after a period of time, %APP_VER% gets replaced with
its value in the other vars, i.e. it gets expanded like so:
PATH=C:\APP.1.2.3\bin;...

How does that happen and what can I do to prevent the expansion?

Thank you,
>
> I have a problem. I have discovered how hard it
> apparently is to
> remove Outlook Express in XP.
>
> My son in Calif has messed up his OE so bad I
> figure the best thing
> for him to do is uninstall the thing and then
> reinstall. Imagine my
> dismay to discover how involved that is.
>
> So - can anyone tell me a simple (I emphasize
> simple) way that he do
> what I think he should do?
>
> There is a program to do this I think I see
> (Google), but you gotta
> pay for the dang thing. Is that my only choice?

Best/easiest thing to do is download and install a
new IE6 (or IE7 if you want tabbed browsing and
other things it offers). They're both available
from the Microsoft site. That way everything gets
reloaded and reinstalled.

You can't remove OE: It's part of IE which in
turn is part of XP; an integral part. Any program
that claims to fully "remove" OE is lying and it
cannot be done, from everything I've read. It CAN
be made invisible so it'll seem to not be there,
but the needed parts obviously will still be there
or the machine wouldn't boot properly. I've no
actual experience with that but I've read it
enough from reputable resources (non MS) to
believe it's the case.

Get IE6 or 7 right from MS; don't trust a site
that could have bastardized it and done who knows
what to it or you could end up with even more
problems.

OR, if you have your original XP CD, you could use
Control Panel's add/remove, add/remove windows
COMPONENTS to do essentially the same thing.
>I must be doing something wrong!
>
> When I use Windows Search to search for text within a file, it works if
> the
> file has a .txt extension but not if it's a .css, .html, .js or other
> file.
>
> What I try is this (on Windows XP):
>
> Click on "Start"
> Click on "Search"
>
> In the "All or part of the file name" field, I enter *.html or *.css
>
> In the "A word of phrase in the file" field, I enter the text I am
> searching
> for. This can be as simple as a single word, such as banana or peach.
>
> In the "Look in" field, I choose "browse" and select the appropriate
> folder.
>
> I click the "Search" button.
>
> NO RESULTS EVER FOUND, but if I rename the files as *.txt and change that
> entry in the "All of part of the file name" field, the seach is
> successful.
>
> What am I doing wrong???
>
> Thanks in advance for any advice. I have lots of non "text" files that
> are
> in fact text (Notepad will open them with no trouble) but can't get
> Windows
> Search to find anything unless the file is specifically a .txt file.
>
> Thanks in advance for any advice offered.
>

You're doing nothing wrong - this is "by design". Microsoft really messed up
with this one, IMHO: XP's search function will, by default, NOT search
within all file types. Check out the official griff at:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309173: "Using the "A word or phrase in the
file" search criterion may not work."

I'd recommend scrolling down to Method 2 - or, if you're comfortable editing
the registry, just make the following simple tweak, which I'll quote from
near the end of that page:

"...set the FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions DWORD value to 1 in the
following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\ContentIndex"

The usual warnings about registry editing apply - be careful, take a backup,
caveat emptor, etc.

I just don't trust Windows to search "properly" since I first chanced upon
this; searching worked fine under Windows 2000, but then MS had to start
"improving" it. I now always use Agent Ransack
(http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/) - it's far superior to XP's
utility in just about every respect, and is freeware.
