Hi, Michel.

Throw away that MS-DOS boot disk! Or at least hide it so that you won't be
tempted to use it again.

As several others have told you, initial partitioning and formatting can be
done by Setup after booting from the WinXP CD-ROM. After WinXP is
installed, use Disk Management (type diskmgmt.msc from the Run prompt) to
create and delete other partitions, assign or reassign drive letters, and
format them to your choice of FAT or NTFS. As they said, MS restricts the
ability of WinXP to format FAT32 to volumes no larger than 32 GB. If you
insist on larger FAT32 volumes, you will have to find that boot floppy I
told you to hide. According to MS, "The maximum volume size that Windows 98
can create is 127.53 GB."
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...asp?frame=true

Note that these limits are per VOLUME (primary partition or logical drive in
an extended partition). Since a physical drive can hold several volumes,
the limits per HD are several times the per-volume limits.

FAT or NTFS? Unless you plan to install Win9x/ME on this computer, there's
no reason to use FAT on it. NTFS is much more secure, both in the sense of
secure from unauthorized access and in the sense of secure from hard drive
glitches.

See this TechNet page for more details:
Size Limitations in NTFS and FAT File Systems
http://www.microsoft.com/TechNet/pro...asp?frame=true

I've been using a 120 GB secondary drive for several months. The largest
volume on it is 60 GB, but that's my choice, not due to any restriction.
Disk Management would have cheerfully created a single partition for the
whole 120 GB if I had asked, and formatted it NTFS.

If they are non-powered speakers, that may be your issue. Many computers
After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part
of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
> Firstly I appologise as my computer wouldn't let me commence my own
>
> Ive just purchased service pack 3 (windows xp) and previously had I
> think windows 95 (but it was apparently a dodgy copy). We have
> installed the service pack 3 and yes yes yes,,,,, there is no volume
> at all. I have tried help and support to no avail. I have also
> tried some hints on here to no avail.
>
> There seems to be a problem with D drive. I can get media player to
> play video clips but no sound.
> When I go into Sounds and Audio Devices, there is no audio device
> under volume, when I try sound and try to play a windows default
> sound - nothing,,, It looks like (an I really don't know) like maybe
> the hardware is incorrect or there is no hardware??
>
> I tried Start, All Programs, Accessories, entertainment and volume
> control then i get a message "NO ACTIVE MIXER DEVICES". Then follow
> the next steps which is Control Panel, Print and OtherHWare devices
> and Add Hardware then blow me down,,,,,,, it tells me to insert the
> installation cd (which im guessing is the disc labelled Windows Home
> Edition) and install hardware this way,,,
>
> How do I install off of this disc when we have already been through
> and installed everything on it,,,,,,
>
> Can someone help please????

Hi,

Increasing the Virtual Memory does help a little, though you wont get the
same effect as to increase the RAM itself. Furthermore, Virtual Memory eats
up your hard disk space. Personally, I would give at least 3GB for this.
>
> Why do you think you need to add virtual memory? The more the system
> relies on virtual memory the slower the system performance becomes. You
> need to address the cause not the symptoms i.e. the symptoms being the
> messages reporting low virtual memory. Changing the virtual memory
> settings to Windows Managed does not resolve the problem.
>
> What is the CPU and how much RAM does your computer have? Right click on
> the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get this
> information.
>
> Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
>
> What is your computer make and model?

There is some info missing..
What OS is actually installed when you try to install XP???
Are you trying to install XP over Vista64 or same partition/diffferent
partition/different HD???..what???

The normal procedure for a dual boot system would be to have the older OS
installed 1st.
Then to install the newer OS onto a different partition or HD.
The last install will overwrite the bootsector (MBR) of the older install
and usually create the dual boot menu that you see when you boot.

What exactly are YOU trying to accomplish??
