> Hello,
> Is there a way to dynamically change the location of a shortcut?
> Here is my issue:
> I have a network folder: \\server\share\test
>
> in the test folder I have Application1.exe and Shortcut to
> application1
>
> I copy the test folder from the \\server\share *to C:\Program Files
>
> so now I have a C:\Program Files\test *folder
> the thing is, the shortcut to application1 still point to \\server
> \share\test
>
> Is there a way to dynamically change this so when I move it to another
> location, the shortcut changes?
>
> so the shortcut should be: C:\Program Files\test
>
> Any ideas? is this possible?
> I am copying this folder via a batch script to 50+ computers and this
> would make things much easier
>
> thanks.

Problem: Distributing common desktop to all computers

Have tried:
- GPO. Does not include all settings I need. If we use Active Desktop
settings, wallpaper is distributed, but shortcuts on the desktop looses
transparent view with shadows...
- Mandatory profile. Works fine except for desktop wallpaper. It will not
show up if the user is not administrator on local machine. We don't want
pupils til be local administrators, so they won't get any wallpaper...

Anyone having a better idea?
> My daughters machine came with XP Home which I immediately upgraded
> to xp Pro.
>
> Prior to wiping out the hard drive and rebuilding the machine, I
> ran a utility that I found on the web which provides you with the
> Product Key (KeyFinder http://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/ ).
>
> Using XP pro installation CD, I install using the key returned to
> me with KeyFinder and I get an invalid key.
>
> Downloading XP Pro from MSDN, serveral different versions
> (Original, Service Pack 2, Service Pack 3) and any one of the keys
> which MS provides with my subscription to MSDN, I get an invalid
> Product key.
>
> I have not mis-keyed the value, I have checked, recheck and then
> rechecked again - all provide the same error message - Invalid
> Product Key.

When you upgraded your daughter's computer to Windows XP Professional - what
media did you use?

Retail?
Retail Upgrade?
(Those are your two choices if you actually performed an upgrade
installation.)

As for your MSDN CD problem - test to see if the machine is causing the
trouble - or if you have something else to look at - use the ISO download to
install on a Virtual machine (like a VirtualBox machine) with your MSDN key.
If it works - then there is a problem with the machine.

I assume you are downloading:
Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 (x86) - CD (English)
File Name:
en_windows_xp_professional_with_service_pack_3_x86 _cd_x14-80428.iso

Have you tried clicking on "Get another Key" and trying a different key?
(Yes - I have an MSDN subscription.)

Why did you upgrade it to professional in the first place?
Did it need to join a domain?
Using EFS?
Remote Desktop to it? (I'd have just put TeamViewer on it. heh)

I upgraded my motherboard, like I've done many times before. In order for my
existing OS to recognize the new mobo, I start the upgrade installation of
XP, replace the hardware then boot and let the install do its thing. I've
done this several times with upgraded motherboards and never had a
problem...until now.

I boot the system and let the install do its thing. It eventually asks me
for a driver location for an item. When I went to navigate to my D drive, it
showed the drive icon with a white question mark in a red circle. I have
never seen this before. I happent to right-click and noticed Properties is
available. Checking shows the File System as RAW and all size values at 0s.

The drive is IDE configured with 2 basic partitions: 1) Active primary
partition is 20G as drive C and 2) primary partition as remainder of space
~210G as drive D.

I pulled the drive and stuck it in an external USB enclosure to make sure
it's still okay and nothing happened during the upgrade process. I connected
it to my other system and it can see it just fine. Note that all my
computers are running Windows XP Pro with Sp3.

I have a backup of everything, so I decided to delete the partition and
recreate it and reformat it (not quick format either) using the default
values. I then took the drive back to the PC with the new mobo and plugged
it in. Rebooted and the setup resumed. Basically the same thing happened as
noted in the 2nd paragraph above.

I really have no idea what the heck is up at this point. I can't do
anything on the system with the new mobo because I'm stuck in the upgrade
which I have to do because of the new board. I'm really hoping someone has
an idea of what to do. Help!
> Ok - here's a challenge for you all: How do I set up my Win XP Pro SP3 PC
> at
> home so that when a fax comes in on my fax phone line that goes to a modem
> card in the PC, it wakes up the PC, the PC receives the fax and then the
> PC
> forwards it automatically by email to two or three pre-designated email
> recipients?
>
> To make this worse, I'm not sure what I mean by "wake up" the PC. I
> understand there are varied levels of reduced power consumption, and I'm
> not
> sure how low I can go so that the PC is still "wakeable" fast enough to
> receive the fax. On this score, I might be a bit ahead of the game because
> the PC is a newish Dell Optiplex 755 with built-in ASF and (if I turn it
> back
> on) AMT. (I don't know what ASF or AMT mean, although they sort of sound
> like
> a cup of coffee for a PC at rest.)
>
> On this PC, I prefer to use MS Outlook Express for email although I could
> turn on my Outlook if strictly necessary or install a different email
> program. (I have Outlook Express 6 and Outlook 2003. I could try to
> install
>
> Can you tell I'm somewhere between a newbie and a home intermediate?
> then granular step-by-step instructions.
> the prefered method is to Clean Instal winxp and all apps, but the last time
> I did this took nearly a week to reconfigure everything on this busy system.
> So the question is are there any reccommended apps for moving programs &
> updateing the registry?
> I just want to avoid having to install everything from scratch.
> I have mutiple data backups & Images, on seperate media, so I could simply

As with most Windows applications, you can not normally move the
"installed" version around since the all the installed controls will
expect the original installed location.

Besides, if you do start doing this, you will still risk having to
spend time tweaking the applications in order to make them work.

If you want / need to update the hardware but want to speed up the
process since the current PC is important, I would consider a complete
PC replacement. You can still use the older PC which setting up the
newer PC. Then, when the newer PC is completely set up the way you
need, use the Files And Settings Transfer (FAST) to send over your
data / settings to the new PC.
> Hello
>
> can anyone help me with deploying Xp Images??
>
> What is the best/easiest way to deploy Windows XP SP3 Images (with a lot of
> external software) ??
>
> If i do this in the general way with the WDS Server, I have to make for
> every PC (HAL) one Image... this would be very hard to realize...
>
> is there another way to do this??
>
> I've read about 2 different types of Hardware - Multi or Uni Prozessor.....
>
> Is it possible to create 2 Images (one Multi and one Uni), which I can
> deploy on lots of different PCs`??
>
> I even can't find a goot Walkthrough for that...
>
> maybe u can help me.
> Thanks for the responses. Is there a way to use either the Vista or XP
> setup discs to change the active partition?
> If I continue to use my DOS boot up disk (I don't remember every having to
> add the SATA driver to the DOS boot disk) to see the fat32 partition that

One thing you should know is that Vista will not install into
a FAT32 partition, only NTFS. Also, give Vista at least half
the 120GB. Your best bet is to create and format your FAT32
partition using DOS, then install XP using the SATA drivers.
You can then use Disk Manager to create your FAT32extended
partition and virtual drive, then create and format the primary
NTFS partition for Vista. If you go with 30-40GB for XP, 20-30GB
for your extended, and 60GB for Vista, you should be okay.
Just remember, XP can't format a FAT32 partition larger than 32GB.
>
> Could be the migration less risky in this case as in case
> of SiS 655TX to ATI9100IGP ?
> Once again, the IMHO most important controller: SATA (RAID) is
>> > My board got damaged. It is a permanent damage.
>> > My goal is to move this windows installation to new board
>> > without having to reinstall it.
>> >
>> > Warranty is over.
>> > However, the producer is offering a replacement.
>> >
>> > Replacement offer is also for Pentium 4 family, supporting FSB up to
>> > 800MHz.
>> > It has exact the same SATA controller - good for my intention.
>> > Although as a separate chip on the board. Not integrated in the south
>> > bridge
>> > as on my damaged board.
>> > LAN, FireWire and Audio controllers are also the identic.
>> >
>> > Only the north and south bridges are different: ATI 9100 GPI + ATI IXP
>> > 150
>> > instead of SiS 655TX + SiS 964.
>> >
>> > 1. How smooth can be the migrate process in this situation ?
>> > Advantage - same SATA controllers - I guess I should expect any probs
>> > in
>> > this context.
>> > 2. But, how about the AGP controller ? North bridges are different.
>> > 3. Can this be a problematic point ?
>> >
>> > 4. Any point else to be checked before starting the migration ?
>> >
>> > It is hard to get P4S800D-E Deluxe as a second hand.
>> > 5. Do you know any good source for a search ?
>> >
replaced an Asus P5B Dlx with Intel P965 chipset with an
Asus P6T Dlx with Intel X58 chipset. When I booted up to
both Win XP Pro and 64 bit Vista Ultimate, the system ran
with a few question marks in Device Manager. After I ran the
Intel inf utility, and the new LAN and audio drivers, everything
was 100%, but I did have to re-activate both, with no problems.
