I will look into those products. I heard good and bad things about Net
Nanny. I heard you can easily get around the program or get it to not run.
What I don't like about Net Nanny is it pops up a program that tells you
your blocked or restricted. I'd rather it just block things silently.

I will have to see if Net Nanny can be installed on administrator account
and control other user. I don't want it running in the bedroom computer
while I'm playing games or something.

Would be nice to be able to throttle a users bandwidth also. I don't want
something like Limewire sucking up any bandwidth. If I throttle it to DIALUP
speed, then maybe she won't even want to use it anymore.
>> It'll be for anyone to use, but is there a way I can make it so a certain
> Hi all,
>
> I have a folder containg an exe file (of a program) and some
> associated files. I want to make a shortcut of the exe file on the
> desktop (so that users can run the program by double-clicking the
> shortcut), but I also want that the users should NOT be able to copy
> (and/or view) the contents of the folder.
>
> I searched the newsgroups and found a lot of threads on password
> protecting the folder/permissions/sharing, but the options like "make
> folder private" are not available in my windows as suggested in the
> newsgroups (I am running XP pro, NTFS). Also, encrypting the folder
> ('Encrypt contents to secure data") doesn't help, as folder is still
> accessible. I also tried winzip with password, but in this case the
> shortcut on desktop doesn't work.
> I also tried leaving the folder in the administrator account while
> moving the shortcut to the Guest account, but in this case again the
> shortcut does not work. I tried hiding the folder and it worked, but
> the hidden folder can easily be traced through the shortcut available
> on the desktop.
>
> Is there a way to achieve my target?
>>>
>>> *shrug* That directory sounds like one you created. If there is
>>> anything special about it - you may have done it yourself.
>>>
>>> Did you redirect your "My Documents" there and that is how that
>>> got created? Or do you actually mean
>>> "C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\My Documents\My Music\"
>>> when you say "C:\Docs\My Music"?

>>
>> C:\Docs is the replacement for
>> C:\Documents and Settings\<my username>\My Documents.
>> Made following all the rules nearly a year ago.
>> All other sub-folders of C:\Docs open OK from Run, including
>> very large ones such as My Pictures (51 GB), My Videos (43 GB).
>> My Music (14 GB) is the only exception. I haven't counted the
>> number of files - could that bizarrely impose some sort of limit?
>>

>>> RUN command area - what happens?

>>
>> Nothing, but as the paste is simply the same as before,
>> 'C:\Docs\My Music', it obviously wouldn't!
>>
>> Interestingly, if I use the localised '8.3' version of the path
>> file://C:/Docs/MYMUSI~1
>> that opens OK from Run. But 'C:/Docs/MYMUSI~1' gives the same nil
>> result as 'C:\Docs\My Music'. Very strange...

 > Hi Ramesh,
> I had been looking for the same functionality and ran across this thread,
> downloaded and installed it and it works great!
>
> I've got one small issue that maybe you can help me out with: When I
> paste the path, it encloses the whole path within quotation marks. When I
> create the link and email it in Lotus Notes, the quotation marks cause it
> to not find the path. If I remove them manually, it works just fine. Is
> there a minor tweak that I can make in the script to remove the quotation
> marks when the path gets pasted?
>
> Thanks,
> Has anyone else commented on the fact that the Windows screen background,
> Radiance, is mirror-reversed? It is a photograph of the Northern edge of
> the
> Mare Imbrium (the Left eye of the Man in the Moon). If you have very
> sharp
> vision (or a decent pair of binoculars) you can see this for yourself.
> Presumably this is a photo taken through a reflecting telescope with an
> odd
> number of mirrors, but still, the moon is a real, physical, easily visible
> object, and it is not trivial -I think- to get it backwards. I mean, what
> if
> one of the backgrounds showed a telescopic picture of the Earth taken from
> space and had the continents flipped over? Does anyone know where this
> picture came from and if it has always been backwards? I know it's a bit
> OCD,
> but I "fixed" the image on the computers where I work ;^) .

Hi,

I need to define a set of env vars that point to a particular file tree like
so: APP_VER = C:\APP.1.2.3. I then use that var in other vars like so: PATH
= %APP_VER%\bin;... We changes versions quite often, and all I want to need
to do is change the value of APP_VER and the other vars change accordingly.
(I use the System Properties dialog to set the vars.)

The problem is that after a period of time, %APP_VER% gets replaced with
its value in the other vars, i.e. it gets expanded like so:
PATH=C:\APP.1.2.3\bin;...

How does that happen and what can I do to prevent the expansion?

Thank you,
Jim
