Please help, until recently I have alway received fax on auto after two rings
(using Motorola SM56 modem with XP fax service). Since my computer came back
from being stripped and every thing reinstalled, incoming fax will not work.
I have tried unistalling modem and XP fax service and reinstalling same. All
the auto receive tick boxes are ticked. Any suggestions??
Thanks MH
> I replaced a working fine Lexmark X1150 print, scan, copy (broken paper
> tray) with a new HP 4280 print, scan, copy, and all I get trying to print
> from MS Works 4.0 using Windows XP is an "Out of Memory" message. I have 640
> meg, and system information shows 422 meg available. Installation went
> perfect. It WILL print OK from Quicken 7.1.
>
> I called HP support. A recording says they no longer support the HP 4280,
> which is 6 days old. Microsoft has no plans to update their printer driver -
> tough luck, new printer owner. HP on line automated service suggests I try
> installing an "alternate" driver, one for their Deskjet 550 C. I'm reluctant
> to try this.
>
> Wouldn't it be nice if Corporate America was interested in their product
> working and customers being happy instead of making "liar loans" to people
> who can't afford them? The big shots make 20 million/year by ripping off
> those who can least afford it. It's called "free markets" - free to get rich
> on the backs of the poor.
>
> On another BB location this same problem was reported by someone else. No
> solution has been provided there.

I don't know where you bought the c4280 6 days ago; perhaps you should
go back there for support (or return). As near as I can tell from the
HP site, that's a discontinued product (which squares with the recording
you received). According to cNet, the c4280 was released in May 2007.
With the pace of consumer electronics these days, it's not surprising
that it's been discontinued and replaced. Yes, it's annoying that HP
doesn't offer phone support for a product that came out only 19 months
ago, but what do you expect for a low-end AIO?

Windows error messages are not always as clear as mud. What other
applications are running when you try to print from Works?
> Ok - here's a challenge for you all: How do I set up my Win XP Pro SP3 PC
> at
> home so that when a fax comes in on my fax phone line that goes to a modem
> card in the PC, it wakes up the PC, the PC receives the fax and then the
> PC
> forwards it automatically by email to two or three pre-designated email
> recipients?
>
> To make this worse, I'm not sure what I mean by "wake up" the PC. I
> understand there are varied levels of reduced power consumption, and I'm
> not
> sure how low I can go so that the PC is still "wakeable" fast enough to
> receive the fax. On this score, I might be a bit ahead of the game because
> the PC is a newish Dell Optiplex 755 with built-in ASF and (if I turn it
> back
> on) AMT. (I don't know what ASF or AMT mean, although they sort of sound
> like
> a cup of coffee for a PC at rest.)
>
> On this PC, I prefer to use MS Outlook Express for email although I could
> turn on my Outlook if strictly necessary or install a different email
> program. (I have Outlook Express 6 and Outlook 2003. I could try to
> install
> Outlook 2000, but I'd rather not.)
>
> Can you tell I'm somewhere between a newbie and a home intermediate?
> Please
> do throw technical lingo at me, but I'll need it translated into English
> and
> then granular step-by-step instructions.
>
> Thanks!

If you are interested in debugging the process and determining which file is
causing the problem we can go there but most people would rather just get
the dang spooler running again.

Bruce has some useful information on cleaning out the print drivers.
> Thanks, Alan - but it doesn't work. When I type "net start spooler" at the
> command prompt, I get the messages "The Print Spooler service is starting.
> The Print Spooler service was started successfully." But when I next go to
> Printers and Faxes and click Add Printer, I get the message "Operation
> could
> not be completed. The print spooler service is not running."
>
> I tried a couple of variations -
> 1) Cold boot, then enter "net start spooler" at the command prompt. Same
> result.
> 2) Uninstall the software for that HP1312 printer, and cold boot after
> finishing the uninstall with its associated restarts. Enter "net start
> spooler" after the cold boot. Same result.
>
> Where do I go from here?
>
> TIA,

First, on your 2008 server, stop sharing the faxclient folder. It is not for XP computers and it has nothing to do with sending faxes from XP. If you unshare it, you will not be tempted to use the files inside that folder. They will not help you.

Second, on your 2008 server, change the fax service to use the local system account. It defaults to the Network Service account. I am willing to bet this one step solves 90% of the peoples problems. Restart the service after making the change.

If your XP clients are not at least SP2, stop reading this now and go update them.

Third, on your XP client PC, login with a user who has local admin priv. Go to control panel, add/remove programs. Click on add/remove windows components and make sure you *uncheck* Faxing.

Fourth, have your XP cd handy or make sure you have the I386 folder somewhere. Browse to your 2008 server and double click on the shared Fax printer. Windows should now install the faxing componet your just removed in the previous step. If you are forced to install a modem, just do a generic on any port for now.

Finally, go to printers and faxes and remove any fax printers that may be listed except the one shared from your fax server. Then open the fax console and see if it says connected in the bottom right. Or, click on tools, and choose fax printer status. It should show the server as online.

If you still have problems, check to make sure the permissions you set on the fax printer are correct. The user account you are testing may not have permission to use or manage that shared fax printer.
> The printer is an HP LaserJet 4300tn, and I went to HP's site to grab the
> latest version of the driver for that model. Specifically, I used the HP
> LaserJet 4300 PCL6 driver. (Just for kicks, I completely uninstalled and
> removed the PLC6 driver from my system and tried replacing it with the HP
> LaserJet 4300 PCL5 driver, and that had the exact same problems.)
>
> I don't think driver-version incompatibility is the problem. The Windows
> XP
> installation is fresh, so that printer driver was the first I had
> installed
> on it.
>
> For now, I have removed the LaserJet 4300 driver and replaced it with a
> LaserJet 4000 driver (which was last updated in 2003, unfortunately), and
> it
> works like a charm, from what I can see. In the little testing that I
> have
> done so far, I have not gotten the 4000 driver to crash at all. I don't
> like
> doing that, but this printer *must* work.
>
> Even though I've found a workaround, it would still be nice to know why
> the
> *actual* driver for this printer is having these issues. Doesn't this --
> and
> the fact that this Windows installation is updated and fresh -- point to
> the
> problem likely being with the LaserJet 4300 driver itself rather than
> anything else?
>
>> I pinged the HP print driver developer who works out of Redmond. He did
>> not
>> have time but had asked which printer model is this driver for?
>>
>> One deficiency which HP has continued through the years (I've discussed
>> this
>> with HP so no disrespect intended) is the incompatibility of previous
>> driver
>> version registry settings with the next version of the print driver.
>>
>> Basically, version 1 print driver writes x registry key. Now version 2
>> driver comes along and the end users (you) updates version 1 driver to
>> version 2. When version 2 driver reads the registry keys, it does not
>> handle the version 1 data and the process which loads the data can
>> terminate
>> or handle this exception and complain (this is the popup in explorer).
>>
>> HP's recommendation is to completely uninstall the old driver (which
>> means
>> deleting the printer, the driver, and uninstalling any other software
>> that
>> was installed with the setup.exe) and then reinstall the printer using
>> the
>> new driver. This is not a simple feat when you have 200 of these devices
>> installed on a print server.

We have recently bought 70 new HP3005 laser printer for our organization.
These were to replace old HP1100 series printers. All of our machines are
SP2 with Office 2003 and some Office 2007. Using the newest PCL6 drivers
with these printers have caused problems with our Office 2003 users and
reverting back to the PCL 5e drivers cause a different set of problems for
our Office 2007 users. We have been round and round with HP and have no good
solution.

What we did notice was that upgrading to SP3 installs a new version of the
unidrv.dll that fixes every problem! Unfortunately, SP3 has caused problems
with some of out legacy apps and we arent able to move to it as an
organization yet.

Is there any WSUS update that will provide just this update to the
unidrv.dll for us? I heard that there was but may not be available anymore.
It would solve so many problems. The version of the undrv.dll that we
currently have on everything is 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205). The
version that fixes everything is 6.0.6001.22127 (vistasp1_ldr.080302-0124).

Thanks for any help!
From their web site for this printer:

Selected FAQ

Q: Why are all the lights on the printer flashing?
A: When all the lights flash, your printer may have an internal error.
Verify that all packing material has been removed. Instructions for removing
the packing material will be found on a notice in the box. If the printer
has not made any noises for more than five minutes, turn off the printer.
Open the cover and check for any obstructions. Power on the printer to see
if the error still occurs. If the unit still gives an error, please contact
the EPSON Connection Technical Support for further assistance.

Since this unit has been discontinued service will be expensive and if there
isn't a hung up piece of paper in the unit it is time to get rid of it and
buy another.

Most likely there is an outstanding reference count on the print file that
of the Zenographics print drivers so I'm pretty sure you cannot substitute
an HP print driver that ships with XP.

See if changing the print processor to winprint (Advanced tab of printer
properties) or disabling SNMP on the port helps.

Also look for any other "printer" software that may be opening a ref count
to the job (status monitor maybe). If you find something, stop it and see
if that helps.
>
