plays videos in small box only

When I play any video with windows media player the video appears to play off
the screen to the left (out of visible range)
if I minimize the window media player the video can be seen in a small
screen attached to my toolbar
if I maximize the windows media player the video continues to play off the
screen to the left
can any one help me get the larger video box back onto the center of my
screen?

Windows XP does not play .wmv files

My Windows XP does not play .wmv files. As a result, I believe that I
am unable to use .wmv files in Nero as a video source.

Is there something missing from my windows xp? Where do I find it or
how do I fix it?

Each media player has its own patenant codec. You need to download the divx
player at www.divx.com. Avi files is a divx codec. Once you download the
player, all the codecs for avi files will be in your computer. Then if you
want to still use the media player to watch avi files, go into options, file
types then check the avi box. I suggest using I-tunes for any audio you will
play. While you are in "file types" in the media player. Uncheck any box
that is not a windows player file, (it will tell you in the description of
that particular file). Mpg or mpeg is a real player file. Any of those file
types, uncheck and let real player be the default for those filese. wmv and
wav files are for the media player. default those to the media player. I
suggest - Uncheck Avi files in any player you have except the divx player.
Let divx be the default for avi. Divx has much better sound and video than
any other player and its free, and it is a microsoft product so it is safe.
Quicktime is an apple product and can be useless in a pc. Unfortunatly, you
need it if you have Itunes. i hope this helped.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately, the Dimension 8100 can only
use an obsolete type of RAM, which is quite expensive -- kinda like
trying to find a replacement 8-track tape deck for a '73 Chevy,
they're expensive because nobody makes them anymore. The cheapest
8100-compatible RAM (RDRAM?) I've been able to locate is something
like $30 for 256 MB, which seems like an obscenity when that same
amount of money would add a couple of GB onto my other computer. That
would get me up to 512 MB RAM, and the price isn't prohibitive, but I
don't want this to be one of those $50 projects that ends up costing
$500 at the end of the day. What makes my skin crawl is that
everything else I might buy to do this -- video out card, vid capture
card, sound card, cables -- could easily be transferred over to my
other PC or elsewhere, but that RAM could only be used on that PC. Oh
well, I'll spend that money if I really have to.

Thanks for the concern, but the sound is the least of my worries; I'm
a long-time musician/audio geek, and have plenty of spare stuff lying
around ... ;)

I'm leery of off-brands too (been burned a couple of times; haven't we
all?), and there's a lot of appeal in just picking a name brand (ATI/
AMD) and going with it. Based on your comments, I'm looking at the
ATI Wonder cards. You've read my situation right, I don't need any of
the tuner/FM/etc features and am just gonna turn all that stuff off
(although working with DVDs would be nice).

In particular, I'm looking at the ATI Wonder 550 and ATI Wonder 650.
Any comments on those cards? Thanks.

Easy solution would be to download
and install the free VLC media player.

For your current dilemma...it's probably
a video driver issue...one way to test it
would be to reduce your Graphics Hardware
Acceleration as per the instructions in
the following article.

If an improvement is realized...go to...
the support site of your video adapter's
manufacturer and search for Windows
XP Compatible drivers.

If you don't know the make and model of
your video adapter...check the documentation
that came with the computer.

Also you could try these steps...
Go to...Start / Run...type...
msinfo32 ...press enter.

On the System Information screen...choose...
Components / Display...

You should find the make and model of your
display adapter as well as the driver version.

If the driver on the support website is more
current than the one you are running...
download it and install it. Also you should
find and follow the installation instructions
at the support site.

Once the driver is updated/reinstalled...return
your acceleration to Full.

Having the exact same problem with a Microsoft NX3000 webcam my daughter
got for Christmas which refuses to work properly with her Dell Vostro
1000 laptop with a Sempron 3800, 1 GB of RAM and Windows XP.

The Vostro also has an ATI video chip.

It functions correctly at the lowest resolution, but the video breaks up
at 640x480 and 320x240.

It works correctly when plugged into our aging desktops, with half the
RAM and smaller processors than the Dell.

Please share if you find a solution outside the group. We will, as well.
I have another brand of webcam coming which advertises no need for extra
drivers. Will post if it works.

Streaming movies on TV problem

A confusing issue, to me, and long question. I just started Netflix Instant
Movies. I want to watch them on my TV. I have a Radeon card and if I
"clone" the desktop my icons and background are there but the Netflix player
isn't. So I have it "extended" and only my background shows and so does the
player. But the player, eventhough working on my PC, is just a blank screen
on the TV. If I drag the player on my PC to the far right, it then shows on
my TV and all is fine. But in order to pause the movie, stop it, or anything
else since it's no longer visible on my PC (just the edge) I have to go into
the living room and aim my cordless mouse at the PC and use the curser on the
TV!! Lol, lol. Does this make any sense?
Any thoughts as to how to avoid this entire deal? Thanks for your
indulgence, though I expect no responses, lol

A Microsoft NX3000 webcam my daughter got for Christmas refuses to work
properly with her Dell Vostro 1000 laptop with a Sempron 3800, 1 GB of
RAM and Windows XP.

It functions correctly at the lowest resolution, but the video breaks up
at 640x480 and 320x240.

It works correctly when plugged into our aging desktops, with half the

Hi

I hope this is the correct newsgroup. I have a customer who has downloaded
their pictures from the festive season into their My Pictures folder. There
are some .AVI files mixed in amongst his photos, as he has used the camera's
movie function. When he tries to access the folder that contains these
files, he gets a DEP execution error, and Windows Explorer closes down.

Why is this, and how can it be remidied?
