I have 2 PPTP VPN connections to remote customer sites that for whatever
reason have decided to stop working. I get one error of 619 and the other
721. The odd thing is that I can connect to these two with the same setup on
another XP and Vista machine. So the trouble is unfortunately on my work
notebook. L2TP connections and Cisco VPN connections are not affected, only
the PPTP.

Each one will show the indicator that it is verifying username and password
but will go no further. I believe that the process is stuck trying to
establish a connection and just does not complete. I have recreated the two
connections on the notebook and met the same results.

I have already recovered this notebook once to factory defaults, and do not
wish to do the same should I have to.

Can anyone help me ferret out the issue, or has seen this happen to PPTP
connections? I can tell you that each VPN is connecting to a firewall device,
one an IBM ISS box and the other a Fortigate.

I cannot stress enough that the problem is local to my notebook, since I can
connect using other systems with my credentials.

Hi all, i am setting up a vpn server with the exception that instead of
running physically on a server, the operating system is installed as a
virtual machine using MS Virtual PC. This is how it is setup:

Host (physical) OS has two interfaces, one connected to internal network and
the other to external connection using two IPs, one public and the other
private. The virtual machine is connected to the network via these two
interfaces, of course using different IPs. Pinging is all OK and there is
uninterrupted network flow. In fact the virtual machine OS is a child domain
of the physical domain and active directory is being replicated without any
problem.

I have forwarded port 1723 from modem to router and i used to work with it
just fine, therefore virtual servers are set OK.

However my problem is this...how can I forward the 1723 port to my virtual
machine? should I use the public IP address of the host OS or of the virtual
machine? I tried both but with no luck and I guess I am missing something
here...

I know its a bit hard to understand but i left nothing out and would
appreciate your help!

Thanks a million!!

I'm using the Juniper Network Connect Adapter for VPN connections at work.
I'm trying to setup access to VPN clients from a server that runs ADMT.
However, I'm not having any luck connecting to the VPN clients over TCP 445.
There are no firewalls or security software in the way for my testing. The
test VPN client is running Windows XP SP3.

TCP 445 is listening on 0.0.0.0:0, but I can only connect to it with
localhost, physical adapter IP address, or by name. When I try to connect
via VPN IP address (even from the client itself), it fails to connect.
PortQry shows that it's actually not listening on the VPN IP address.
However, I can connect to TCP 135 & TCP 3389 (also listening on 0.0.0.0:0 in
netstat -an) by VPN IP address locally and remotely.

What would cause TCP 445 to bind to all adapters except the VPN adapter? Is
there something that I have to manually enable?

Any help is appreciated.
>I have a server running Windows Server 2003 and a laptop running
> Windows XP.
> When the the laptop is in the office and connects wirelessly to the
> server, everything works fine between the laptop and the server in
> both directions.
> When I take my laptop home and connect to the server via VPN however,
> I can see the server and use all of its resources without any problem,
> but the server cannot see my laptop.
>
> For example, when I'm connected via VPN to the server from home and
> type \\servername\sharename from my laptop, I can see everything I
> should be seeing and am able to add and edit files on the server. But
> when, using that same connection, I go to the server at the office and
> type \\laptopname\sharename, I get an error message saying it cannot
> find the laptop.
>
> I have a DLink modem at home and I connect wirelessly to it. I have
> another laptop running Windows Vista, and when I have that laptop here
> at home connected to the VPN, that laptop can both see and be seen by
> the server and it has bidirectional file editing working too - so it
> is not some setting in my modem/router.
>
> I have made sure the Workgroups match and that all firewalls and
> antivirus programs are completely turned off. My guest account on the
> laptop is enabled (if that makes any difference).
>
> Also one quirky thing - when I'm connected via VPN from home, my
> Internet and email don't work. I know I can uncheck the Default
> Gateway box to make those work, but then the file sharing doesn't
> work. I don't know if this is related.
>
> Any help is greatly appreciated.

 > when connecting remotely [by tel line and modem] from win/xp to
> some drawback opposed to some other third-party connection methods
> screen refresh, file transfer. at the midd 90-ties, with msdos we
> had excelent experience with pcanywhere 4.5, it was extremely simple,
> powerfull and reliable for remote
> access and file transfer.
>
> so, i would like to read some advice or experience about built-in

In general - my experience with the built-in Remote Desktop (for Windows XP
to Windows XP (Professional and supersets) connections) is better than
almost all third party products. Makes sense - really - because you are not
adding any overhead to the OS that isn't really already there.

Otherwise - even though I used to use PC Anywhere, etc - I now use Remote
Desktop, Remote Assistance, UltraVNC (sometimes single-click) and TeamViewer
for all my remote needs - depending on the situation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a network which includes laptops that connect back to the domain via
an application called NetMotion. This software allows the laptops to go
between WiFi and Cell mobile networks while maintaining a persistent
connection back to my network.

The problem I'm running into invlolves what I believe to be behaviors with
Home Drives/directories. When I have a user logon which has a home directory
set in AD, the computer acts sluggish (when on the slower link connection)
when perforing NON-network tasks such as clicking the start menu. I know
that a lot of SMB packets are being transmitted back to my DCs from looking
at packet traces. These packets are all looking to the home directory
located on a file server. When I logon with a user account that DOES NOT
have a home directory configured, these problems go away (along with the
constant SMB traffic).

Removing the home directory for all users isn't a viable option as when on
the LAN they are necessary. I'm just wondering if there is a way to make the
remote XP pro domain clients (laptops) ignore the homedir information when
the users logon. Thanks!

> the
> and
> pointed to my IIS server on this new box.. I go to the site and log in
> with a
> network username and password i can open the sharepoint site fine. I type
> the
> name of a computer on my network into the remote desktop webpart i have on
> the main page and it tells me that it cannot find the remote computer. The
> computer name is valid and remote connections are enabled. I have also
> tried
> http://192.168.1.120:1374/tsweb/ is what i copied and pasted from that
>
> Is the article correct in telling me to open open 1374?
>
> When I type in my home IP, how will Remote Desktop Web Connection know
> to
> connect to my laptop and not the desktop pc?
>
> As for the work issues you pointed out, I should have explained
> further, as
> that won't be an issue, as I won't be connecting from an office with a
> strict
> network.
>

The syntax is public.ip:port/tsweb/

Example:

12.34.56.78:8080/tsweb

....where 12.34.56.78 is the public IP of your router and if 8080 is the
port you change to instead of using TCP Port 80. Now with that example
you need both TCP Port 8080 (IIS) *AND* TCP Port 3389 (Remote Desktop)
forwarded/opened to the private LAN IP of the PC your trying to connect
to. Both ports are required. Its also possible your work blocks TCP Port
3389 outbound. Here are examples for a Linksys WRT54GL router.

http://www.portforward.com/english/r...T54GL/HTTP.htm
http://www.portforward.com/english/r...te_Desktop.htm

You can test this from a remote site like a family or friends house
also.
> I would like to setup remote assistance in XP.
> When you go into help and support centre and selecte offer remote
> assistance i want to enter in the ip address of the machine and
> remote manage the machine. However i am unable to do so.
> i am the in the domain admins group, i have allowed that group
> access in gpedit.msc under remote assistance
> I can RDP the machine however.
> Can someone please point me in the correct direction to setup the
> work stations.

Offering remote assistance is usually only viable in a domain environment.
Otherwise you cannot *offer* remote assistance. The person on the remote
end could request (via email, Messenger, etc) remote assistance and you
could use that invitation to accept and carry out the request.
