Extremely Slow Dual Boot

Posted: 06-14-2006, 06:28 PM
I am dual booting Vista and XP Pro SP2. I have an 80 gig SATA drive that I
split in half which already had XP installed.
Everything is working but when you boot the machine, it sits at a black
screen with the cursor flashing in the upper left corner for about a minute
before the boot option menu appears. Once I select an OS everything seems to
move along and both operating systems run fine.
On another system I have only Vista installed and it boots right into Vista
very quickly so it seems to be something with the boot loader.
Any ideas on where this hang is coming from and how I can remove it?

Sorry for the double post. I kept saying there was an error.

Have you reported this as a bug against Vista Mail and the Vista Help and
Support Center?

I have not. I appears to be specific to this hardware. I installed Vista as
a dual boot on different hardware and the boot times are the same as an XP/XP
dual boot, so something is just peculiar about that hardware. Although an
XP/XP dual boot on the original hardware is much faster than an XP/Vista dual
boot.

Sorry to awaken a dead post, but i have this exact same problem and i
haven't spotted it anywhere else on the net and i've been looking for
days. I've updated my bios to the latest V 9.4 AMI. Vista is set to
auto update, i'm not really sure what else i can do, i've tried a lot
of tweaking in the bios, but everything seems to load fine in the bios,
it finishes its test and says hit escape to boot...5,4,3,2,1 and then it
boots to a black screen with a cursor in the top left cornor blinking
for approximately 40 seconds. And then the Dual Boot menu appears.
Initially i thought the boot.ini of each system could help me by
reducing the timer from 30 seconds to 10 seconds, but that only makes
the dual boot menu that appears stay visible for 10 seconds, so that
wasn't the problem.

I'm running VISTA 64 on a 64bit AMD FX-60 dual core, socket 939, 2x512
OCZ Ram, 2x30-40gig 5400rpm IDE HD's, HIS 1950 256ram AGP, MSI
K8T800Pro Rev 2.0, Audigy V1.0. I've ordered the Temjin TJ-09 so
hopefully i can get my two 150gig raptors running in there with those
two old 5400 rpm drives as backup data disks. and run vista on the
raptors eventually, but for now i have to solve this problem.

Thanks

First, I don't know why you would be entering the bios and have to hit
escape, so that is unusual. As to the delay after that, you should check to
make sure you have the boot priorities set with the proper hard drive set as
first in boot priority. It may be searching for floppies, CD players, etc
before it gets to the hard drive.

Means the CMOS battery's dead and the BIOS is resetting defaults every time
it's powered up.
