Hi Jenna, try this kb article (even if you haven't done a repair - ignore the title) -
common problem

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by
using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation

I have read the suggestions in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 but am
not sure how to proceed. My problem is that all the updates download but they
do not install. Should I
1. Install Service pack 3 before continueing or after doing the other steps.
viz
then 2.after SP 3 , register the Wups2.dll file in Windows by the suggested
procedure
then 3. re-download and install the Windows Update Agent [I must already
have it as the updates do download]. Do I need to uninstall it first? If so ,
how?
If I need it how do I find out which one of the 3 on offer I should use.
x86-based systems
x64-based systems
Itanium-based systems

Sorry to be thick but I am not very technically minded

Try re-registering the file as requested in the article.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

If that doesn't work then proceed to downloading the WU client (no need to uninstall the
previous one)

How to Check Which Version of Windows You Are Running

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Run dialog box, type winver
3. Click OK.

A dialog box displays the version that you are running.

Once you get all the updates to install and everything is okay, then SP3 should be offered
in due course. Don't try and manually install it at this stage.
