fax duration

My fax program from XP cuts off the attempt to send a fax if there is
no reception in one minute. I often need it to continue attempting
after that minute is up, especially when faxing to a number that has
an answering machine attached. How would I extend the program's
attempt time?

You can't, nor should you need to. There is no need to try for more than a
minute.
You can configure the number of retries and the interval between retries.

thanks... I know I technically shouldn't need to, but one
of my usual fax recipients has a weird and long answering
machine that I have to suffer through. Thanks anyways.

You can do that by following these steps:-

1) Go to the device manager. (Launch devmgmt.msc)
2) Go to the Modem node, and select you modem.
3) Right-Click and select the "Properties" menu option.
4) In the Properties page go to the "Advanced" taband click the "Change
Default Preferences" button.
5) In the "default preferences" window on the "General" Pane and change the
value of "Cancel the call if not connected within" from 60 secs to what you
wish to.
