Fax grabs modem and com port

Posted: 02-10-2004, 11:56 PM
I have XP pro with all updates. I use a dial up modem connection to reach my ISP. It always worked fine until I added fax capability, using the XP fax program. After adding fax, the fax program grabs the modem and/or modem port, and will not allow my dial up connection to address the modem. I have solved this by going into msconfig and unchecking the fax box under services. This has caused two more problems: 1 - when I boot up, the machine uses selective start and runs msconfig, asking me to put it back to default (which I ignore), and 2 - If I want to use the fax, I need to reset msconfig and reboot. Isn't there a simpler way to turn the fax capability on and off at will? Thanks for helping.
