With rare exception, SP1 fixes this problem.

Fax Monitor Stopped Working
Posted: 12-08-2003, 08:35 PM
I have used XP's fax service for a year with no issues.
Without notice, my speakers no longer procuce a ring sound
when the phone is ringing and the answer icon no longer
appears in the system tray. The fax monitor no longer
gives detailed information but I can still fax. Any
suggestions? This has now become difficult to use.

A number of standard update and repair procedures disabled the Fax Monitor
in the initial release of Windows XP. Most of these problems were fixed in
Service Pack 1. Make sure you apply SP1 if you notice this problem.

I had the same problem and applied SP1.
It seemed worked fine for a while then the problem
started again (no fax monitor appears, no sounds).
What should I do now?

Good question. I haven't seen any known causes for the problem arising after
SP1. It seems to be a new problem. Can you think of any changes made to your
configuration, software updates, repairs, etc. before it stopped working
again?

No. I didn't change anything.
It worked fine right after SP1 was applied.
I shut down the computer in the evening and next morning,
I found the monitor is not working.
My fax machine is Brother MFC8500, by the way. Is the
problem anything to do with the fax machine?

Thanks.

What does a fax machine have to do with any of this?

OK.
So it doesn't matter which fax machine I use.
Now, back to the original question.
I applied SP1 and fax monitor worked fine for that day.
I shut down the computer, then next morning, the monitor
stop working (I can still send and receive fax though).
I didn't change anything. I didn't install anything new.

What should I do now?

Thanks.

I have the identical problem. FAX Monitor and sounds
worked fine until recently, but I can still send and
receive faxes but with considerable inconvenience. I have
SP1 installed, but it still doesn't work. Could I
reinstall SP1 over the existing SP1 or would that cause
further problems? Thanks.
