Indeed, you have no dial tone. You need an analog phone line.

Sorry. You cannot send a fax that way. You need a dial-up fax/modem. Then,
that must be connected to the phone line. There might be a phone plug in the
ADSL "modem" that you can use for that purpose or you might have to use a
splitter to connect to the same line as the ADSL modem. Best to check with
the provider of your ADSL line.

If you have a separate line for your phone, you can certainly connect the
dial-up fax/modem to that. XP has an appropriate fax client for the purpose
of sending faxes however it has to be properly configured. Check the help
system and let us know.

I experience the same problem as Rick, only I connect to the Internet using
a cable-modem and have a telephone line plugged into my fax modem. I get a
dial-tone, and hear the fax dialing, but never a connection. The XP fax
client times out waiting for a connection.
Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, Windows XP Fax has proven to be incompatible with many common
modems and drivers, particularly older ones, even if the manufacturers claim
they are "compatible" with Windows XP. Modem incompatibility is not apparent
during installation or the initial setup. It only becomes apparent when you
first try to send or receive a fax. The Fax Service will dial or will answer
an incoming fax but then fail with any of a number of unhelpful error
messages such as "Line is busy," "There is no answer," or "Reception error."
There will be nothing in Event Viewer to give a clue as to where the problem
might lie.

These errors have been nearly impossible to track down. To do so requires
enabling both PSS and debug logging of fax transmissions, both of which
require fairly extensive registry changes. For the time being, the best
advice is to attempt to use XP Fax only if you have a modem that is listed
on the Windows XP Hardware Compatibility List and using the latest drivers.

Russ,
I am using a Lucent WinModem, not a hardware modem, so the HCL is not going
to be much help.
Do you have any suggestions on another avenue of approach?
I have an HP psc 1210 all-in-one printer, scanner, copier. I have read that
even though it is not listed as a fax machine, the scanning functions take
care of that piece, with WinModem being able to do the send / receive
functions.
Any ideas for different software to use in place of XP Fax?

Thanks!

Not really. I haven't had time to check any of the third party offerings nor
determine their reliability. Others may be able to help with that.

When I click on the button "Compose New Fax" a message
box comes up:

awsnto32.exe - Entry Point Not Found
X The procedure entry point WnetRemoveCachedPassword
could not be located in the dynamic link library MPR.dll.

I have Windows XP Professional

You lost me. "Compose New Fax..." is not a menu command in Windows XP Fax.
Provide more detail, including where this "button" is and how the
installation of Windows XP Fax proceeded with your analog fax modem.

Russ, I believe he's referring to WinFax...
