File association

I get an e-mail with a .jpg attachment. I want it to open in Photoshop or
Internet Explorer. They used to open in Roxio, but there were so many
conflicts between Roxio and Vista that I uninstalled every vestige of Roxio.
Now, when I click on the attachment I get a blank page (with "done" in the
corner), and a big "Restricted Sites" icon in the taskbar. I have gone to my
security settings, restored defaults, tried manfully to change them to
Internet or Trusted Sites, and when I try again I am back to the Restricted
Sites icon. The help page tells me to open the web site for the program I
want to open, but it's not a web page, it is an e-mail attachment. I am
obviously overlooking something fairly basic. What is it?

Did you try control panel ->> Default Programs ->> Set Default Programs

Maybe I am not understanding what is going on, but that would be th
best way to help ensure that a particular program opened a particula
type of file

There is also right-clicking on a JPG file in explorer, choosing OPE
WITH ->> Choose default program, and then browsing to the program yo
want to use and making sure the "Always use the selected program" box i
checked

Hope this helps. Good luck

I used the Control Panel method to send all .jpg and .jpeg files to Windows
Photo Gallery. There is so darn much capability in a computer requiring
special knowledge to uncover...thanks!

One of the frustrating things that led me to this newsgroup was that
right-clicking on the file did not bring up "Open with...", just "Open." Had
I seen "Open with..." I would have followed that instruction.

I am using Vista with SP1, if that makes any difference.

They should have it listed as an option to take over the file association in
application. If not, then you should be able to find a .torrent file on your
machine, right click on it, and choose "Open With > Choose Default
Program...". From this dialog, you can select which application you want it
to open with. Make sure the checkbox in the bottom left for "Always use the
selected program" is selected and press OK. All .torrent files you try to
launch should then launch with your selected application.
